Tata Motors saw an 11% drop in passenger vehicle sales and a 25% EV slump in January 2025, but commercial vehicles stayed steady. Details on the $1.5B battery giga factory plan and market impact inside.

Tata Cars January 2025 Sales: EVs Dip, Commercial Vehicles Hold Firm

Tata Motors had a mixed bag of results for January 2025, with electric vehicles taking a hit while commercial sales stayed flat. The company sold 80,304 vehicles overall—78,159 in India and 2,145 shipped abroad. Tata did not performed very well in MoM growth

Passenger Vehicles (Including EVs): Down 11%

Sales dropped to 48,316 units compared to 54,033 in January 2024. EVs took the biggest hit, selling just 5,240 units—a 25% slide from last year’s 6,979. Most of these (48,076) were sold domestically, with a tiny 240-unit export bump. Blame it on slower demand, especially for electric models. That said, Tata’s still leaning on popular gas-powered rides like the Nexon, Punch, and Tiago, plus the newer Curvv, to keep its market share strong.

Commercial Vehicles Sales

Sales here barely budged—31,988 units vs. 32,092 last January. Domestically, trucks and buses moved 30,083 units, with heavy-duty trucks and passenger carriers showing small gains. Exports added 1,905 units.

EVs: Short-Term Pain, Long-Term Plans

Tata still working on EVs even though the sales has gone down. They just announced a $1.5 billion bet on a lithium-ion battery giga factory in Gujarat, set to open in 2026. The goal? Cut reliance on imports and power up their future EVs.

Investors

The sales dip, especially in EVs, spooked the market. Tata’s stock dropped 3% to ₹686.05 on the BSE after the news broke.

Bottom Line

Tata’s riding out the EV slowdown for now, banking on its commercial division and upcoming tech investments. But with demand cooling, all eyes are on whether their electric rebound plan—and that shiny new battery plant—will pay off down the road.
