Indian households are facing rising energy costs due to volatile global crude prices and increasing electricity tariffs. Many are turning to electric vehicles, rooftop solar panels, and induction-based cooking to offset these expenses. The impact of these choices varies depending on usage, upfront costs, and government policies.

Key Highlights

  • Fuel costs in Delhi can reach Rs 85,000 to Rs 1.2 lakh annually for petrol and diesel users
  • Rooftop solar systems can pay for themselves in 3 to 10 years with government subsidies
  • Electric vehicles cost nearly five times less per kilometre than petrol or diesel cars
  • Retrofitting existing vehicles to electric offers savings and a payback period of 18 to 30 months
  • Induction cooktops can help reduce LPG usage but are not a complete replacement

Fuel and Electricity Cost Trends

Rajat Grewal in Delhi spends over Rs 5,500 each month on diesel for his Mahindra Thar. In contrast, Kunjan Bhavsar in Ahmedabad pays no electricity bill after installing a rooftop solar system in 2024. His system generates surplus power, earning him around Rs 1,200 in credits recently. The system is expected to pay for itself in five to six years.

Retail fuel prices in India have remained stable due to government intervention, but this may not last. Global crude prices are volatile, and LPG and electricity tariffs often follow international trends. Experts predict that if tensions rise, fuel prices could increase by 10-20 percent. A Rs 4-Rs 5 per litre hike could add Rs 4,000-Rs 7,000 to annual fuel expenses.

For petrol users in Delhi, annual fuel costs can reach Rs 85,000, while diesel users may spend up to Rs 1.2 lakh. Households with multiple vehicles face even higher costs. In comparison, electricity bills for an average urban household consuming 400 units monthly at Rs 5 per unit total about Rs 24,000 annually. Even a 10 percent tariff hike adds only Rs 2,400 per year.

Electric Vehicles and Retrofitting

Electric vehicles (EVs) offer a significant cost advantage. A petrol or diesel car with 15 km per litre mileage at Rs 100 per litre costs about Rs 6.6 per km. In contrast, an EV charged at home costs around Rs 1.2 per km, nearly five times less. The breakeven period for EVs ranges from 4 to 8 years, depending on usage and subsidies. Delhi offers up to Rs 1 lakh in subsidies for new EV purchases.

EVs have lower maintenance costs, often 1.5 to 2 times less than internal combustion engine vehicles. However, charging infrastructure remains uneven, and insurance premiums for EVs are higher. Battery replacement can cost up to 80 percent of a new car’s price, though warranties help mitigate this risk.

Retrofitting existing vehicles to electric costs Rs 3-6 lakh for small cars, compared to Rs 10-15 lakh for new EVs. Savings can reach Rs 4-6 per km, with a payback period of 18-30 months for frequent users. Proper certification and compliance with safety standards are essential.

Rooftop Solar Systems

Rooftop solar systems help households reduce electricity bills and protect against tariff increases. A 3 kW system costs Rs 1.5-2.2 lakh, while a 5 kW system costs Rs 2.5-3.2 lakh. Subsidies can reduce the upfront cost significantly. For example, Bhavsar’s 3.3 kW system cost Rs 1.8 lakh, reduced to Rs 1.2 lakh after subsidies. Maintenance is minimal, but regular cleaning is necessary to maintain efficiency.

Solar generation varies by season, but net metering allows surplus power to be credited against future bills. Typical payback periods range from 3-10 years, depending on consumption and system size. Government schemes like PM Surya Ghar Yojana offer subsidies up to Rs 78,000 for systems up to 3 kW.

Cooking Fuel and Induction Alternatives

LPG remains the primary cooking fuel for most households, but prices are exposed to global shocks. Experts predict a Rs 300-400 increase per cylinder in the medium term. Induction cooktops offer a more efficient alternative for some tasks, though they are unlikely to fully replace LPG. Combining both can help households manage costs and reduce refill frequency.

CarBike 360 Says

As energy prices continue to climb, EVs paired with rooftop solar offer Indian households a practical and future-ready solution. This combination not only cuts monthly expenses but also promotes cleaner living. By investing in sustainable technology today, families can secure long-term savings while contributing to a greener, more energy-independent India.
