The Chennai division of Indian Railways will soon offer battery swapping facilities for electric vehicles at key suburban railway stations. This initiative supports the Government of India’s goal of promoting green mobility, reducing carbon emissions, and encouraging the use of electric vehicles.
Key Highlights
- Chennai division to install battery swapping stations at major suburban railway stations
- 21 contracts awarded for five years to operate and maintain the facilities
- Battery swapping will allow users to replace discharged batteries within minutes
- Facilities will generate annual licence fee revenue of Rs 53.43 lakh
- The move aligns with government efforts to promote electric vehicles and reduce emissions
Battery Swapping Facilities Rollout
Railway officials announced that 21 contracts have been awarded for a five-year period to install and operate battery swapping stations. These facilities will be set up at major suburban stations, including Central, Egmore, Greenways Road, Mandaveli, Kotturpuram, Chintadripet, Thiruvanmiyur, Velachery, St Thomas Mount, Saidapet, Pallavaram, Villivakkam, and Washermenpet. The selection of stations is based on passenger footfall and the demand for electric vehicle infrastructure.
The battery swapping model allows users to exchange discharged batteries for fully charged ones within minutes. This eliminates the waiting time associated with conventional charging. The service will be accessible through mobile applications managed by authorised Charge Point Operators (CPOs).
Operational Details and Revenue
According to the official release, licensees will handle the installation, operation, and maintenance of battery-swapping facilities. The railway administration will provide suitable space within the station premises for these operations. The facilities are designed to require minimal space and will not disrupt passenger movement.
The Chennai division’s suburban network serves lakhs of passengers daily. The new battery swapping stations will benefit commuters, delivery personnel, students, and the general public who use electric vehicles. The initiative is expected to generate an annual licence fee revenue of Rs 53.43 lakh for the railway division.
Government Policy Alignment
Railway officials emphasized that this move aligns with national policies to promote sustainable transportation. The battery swapping stations are part of broader efforts to reduce carbon emissions and support the adoption of electric vehicles in urban areas.
The rollout of these facilities marks a significant step in expanding electric vehicle infrastructure in Chennai. It aims to make electric mobility more accessible and convenient for daily commuters and other users.
