What is it?

The new Sierra EV sits above the Curvv EV and alongside the Harrier EV in Tata's expanding electric portfolio, the new Sierra EV is aimed at buyers looking for a premium family SUV that offers comfort, technology and practicality in equal measure.

Priced from Rs 18.79 lakh (ex-showroom), the Sierra EV enters one of the most competitive segments in the Indian market. Depending on the variant, buyers will also be looking at alternatives such as the Mahindra BE 6, Mahindra XEV 9e, MG Windsor EV Pro, Hyundai Creta Electric, BYD Atto 3 and even select variants of the Tata Harrier EV. Each offers its own strengths, but the Sierra's biggest advantage lies in its blend of emotional appeal and everyday usability.

Rather than chasing outright performance numbers, Tata appears to have focused on building an electric SUV that families would genuinely enjoy living with. After spending time understanding everything the Sierra EV offers, it's clear that this is much more than just another EV with a famous badge.

Design: Nostalgia Meets Modern Sophistication

One glance is enough to tell you that this isn't just another Tata SUV. While the original Sierra inspired the design, Tata has avoided turning it into a retro copy. Instead, the company has intelligently modernised the iconic silhouette without losing its identity.

The signature wraparound rear side glass makes a welcome return, immediately reminding enthusiasts of the original Sierra from the 1990s. Up front, the SUV adopts Tata's latest EV design language with a slim full-width LED light bar, vertically stacked LED headlamps and a clean, aerodynamic fascia.

Rear end of Sierra EV has huge EV nameplate next to Sierra name to separate it from ICE version.

The profile looks muscular without appearing bulky. Pronounced wheel arches, flush-fitting door handles and large alloy wheels give the Sierra a premium road presence, while the floating roof design adds visual drama.

At the rear, connected LED tail lamps span the width of the tailgate, giving the SUV a contemporary appearance during both day and night.

Unlike many modern SUVs that prioritise aggressive styling, the Sierra looks elegant and mature. It feels designed to age gracefully rather than simply attract attention today.

Its proportions also work well in real life. The upright greenhouse promises excellent outward visibility while the squared-off dimensions hint at generous cabin space—something many coupe-style SUVs often sacrifice.

Overall, Tata has struck a difficult balance between heritage and modernity, and the result is arguably one of the most attractive electric SUVs currently on sale in India.

Price And Competition: What Else Can You Buy?

The Sierra EV starts at ₹18.79 lakh, with higher variants crossing the ₹27 lakh mark depending on battery pack and drivetrain. At this price point, buyers have plenty of options. The Hyundai Creta Electric offers Hyundai's proven ownership experience and a feature-loaded package but lacks the Sierra's distinctive personality and spacious cabin.

The Mahindra BE 6 feels sportier, more futuristic and focuses heavily on driving excitement. If performance tops your priority list, it remains a compelling choice. Move slightly higher up the price ladder and the Mahindra XEV 9e delivers impressive technology, larger dimensions and a more premium ambience.

The Kia Carens Clavis EV is amongst the cars whose price overlaps with the Sierra EV.

The MG Windsor EV Pro continues to impress with value for money and generous equipment, while the BYD Atto 3 remains one of the more refined electric crossovers available, albeit at a premium. Even Tata's own Harrier EV becomes an interesting alternative for buyers wanting a larger SUV with dual-motor all-wheel drive. Where the Sierra manages to carve its own space is by combining iconic styling with a genuinely family-friendly interior and competitive pricing.

Cabin: Premium Without Trying Too Hard

Step inside and the Sierra feels significantly more upmarket than previous Tata SUVs.

The dashboard follows a clean, horizontal design philosophy that immediately creates a feeling of width. Soft-touch materials, layered textures and tasteful ambient lighting help elevate the cabin experience without becoming overly flashy.

Dominating the dashboard are large digital displays for the infotainment system and driver instrumentation. The interface appears modern, responsive and packed with connected features, while wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are naturally part of the package.

Triple screens enhance overall cabin ambience and quality. Hard to find any faults inside this cabin.

The panoramic sunroof floods the cabin with natural light, making the already spacious interior feel even airier.

Tata has also paid attention to practical storage. Large door pockets, multiple charging points, wireless charging, cup holders and thoughtfully placed storage spaces ensure everyday usability hasn't been sacrificed in pursuit of style.

The seats deserve special mention. They appear generously cushioned with excellent thigh support and are designed more for long-distance comfort than aggressive cornering.

Noise insulation also seems to have received attention. Electric vehicles are naturally quiet, but Tata has further enhanced refinement through better cabin insulation and improved fit-and-finish.

The overall impression is of a cabin that feels mature, comfortable and premium enough to justify its asking price.

Space: Built For Families

One of the Sierra EV's strongest selling points is expected to be its interior space.

Unlike many modern SUVs that prioritise sloping rooflines, the Sierra retains an upright silhouette, allowing occupants to enjoy excellent headroom in both rows. Rear passengers benefit from generous legroom, a flat floor and supportive seating, making the SUV particularly suitable for long family journeys. Large windows create an airy atmosphere, reducing the feeling of being confined, while the high seating position gives passengers an excellent view outside.

Massive panoramic sunroof and plenty of space in the rear seats enhances feeling of airiness.

This emphasis on practicality makes the Sierra feel like a genuine family SUV rather than a lifestyle crossover. Parents will appreciate the ease of fitting child seats, while elderly passengers are likely to find ingress and egress easier thanks to the SUV's wide-opening doors and sensible ride height.

Boot Space: Practical Enough for Everyday Life

While electric vehicles often compromise luggage capacity because of battery packaging, Tata has ensured that the Sierra EV remains practical for family use.

The boot is wide, well-shaped and easy to access thanks to the large tailgate opening. Unlike some rivals where the sloping roofline eats into usable luggage space, the Sierra's upright design allows you to stack larger suitcases without much hassle. Whether it's airport runs, weekend getaways or grocery shopping, the luggage area should comfortably cater to the needs of a typical Indian family.

Massive boot space has ability to swallow up entire family's luggage for long distance trips.

The rear seats can also be folded down to accommodate larger items, making the Sierra useful for those occasional furniture purchases or long road trips where extra cargo space becomes essential.

Tata has also paid attention to smaller practical details, including a low loading lip that makes lifting heavy bags easier, along with thoughtfully placed storage compartments for charging cables and everyday essentials. While official boot capacity figures vary depending on the variant, what matters more is how usable the space feels—and on that front, the Sierra impresses.

Battery, Range & Charging: Built for Long-Distance Confidence

Perhaps the biggest talking point of the Sierra EV is its battery technology.

Tata is offering the SUV with two battery pack options—a 63 kWh unit aimed at urban users and a larger 75 kWh battery for those who regularly undertake long-distance travel. The larger battery delivers a claimed range of up to 665 km on the MIDC test cycle, making it one of the longest-range electric SUVs currently available from an Indian manufacturer.

Of course, real-world figures will be lower, especially with highway driving, heavy air-conditioning usage and enthusiastic acceleration. Even then, buyers can realistically expect enough range to comfortably cover most weekly commutes on a single charge, while long road trips should require significantly fewer charging stops than many existing EVs.

The Sierra is built on Tata's latest Acti.ev architecture, which has been developed specifically for electric vehicles rather than adapted from an internal combustion platform. This brings benefits in terms of packaging, weight distribution, structural rigidity and cabin space.

Charging flexibility has also improved considerably. Owners can charge the Sierra overnight using an AC home charger, while DC fast charging allows the battery to be replenished quickly during highway journeys. Tata's continuously expanding charging ecosystem further adds confidence, especially as public charging infrastructure improves across India.

One feature that deserves special mention is Tata's lifetime battery warranty for the first registered owner. Battery longevity remains one of the biggest concerns for prospective EV buyers, and this move goes a long way in reducing ownership anxiety. It also reflects Tata's growing confidence in its battery technology.

Safety: Continuing Tata's Strong Reputation

Safety has become one of Tata Motors' biggest strengths over the past decade, and expectations from the Sierra EV are naturally high.

The SUV comes equipped with multiple airbags, electronic stability control, ABS with EBD, traction control, hill hold assist and a comprehensive suite of active safety systems.

Higher variants also feature Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), offering technologies such as adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance, autonomous emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring.

While official crash-test ratings will follow in due course, the Sierra's underlying architecture and Tata's recent track record suggest that occupant protection should remain one of its strongest selling points.

For buyers with young families, this alone could become a major deciding factor.

Pros

Stunning design that successfully revives an iconic nameplate. The Sierra manages to evoke nostalgia without looking dated. It stands out in a crowded SUV market and is arguably one of Tata's best-looking production vehicles.

Spacious and practical cabin

Excellent rear-seat comfort, generous headroom and family-friendly packaging make it highly usable on a daily basis.

Competitive driving range

With a claimed range of up to 665 km, range anxiety becomes far less of a concern.

Premium feature list

From connected technology to ADAS and V2L functionality, the Sierra feels thoroughly modern.

Lifetime battery warranty

This is one of the biggest confidence boosters for prospective EV buyers and could significantly improve long-term ownership appeal.

Cons

Higher variants begin competing with larger premium SUVs

Once you move beyond the base model, buyers may start considering the Harrier EV, Mahindra XEV 9e and even BYD Atto 3.

Real-world range will naturally be lower

Like every EV, the headline MIDC figure should be viewed as an ideal-condition benchmark rather than an everyday expectation.

Charging infrastructure still varies across India

Although improving rapidly, public fast-charging availability remains inconsistent outside major cities and highways.

Verdict: A Worthy Revival of a Legendary Name

For buyers looking purely for driving excitement, the Mahindra BE 6 may still hold greater appeal. Those seeking a larger and more luxurious experience could be tempted by the XEV 9e or Tata's own Harrier EV. Meanwhile, the Hyundai Creta Electric continues to offer the reassurance of an established global brand.

Yet, the Sierra occupies a sweet spot of its own. It combines emotional design with everyday usability in a way that few electric SUVs currently manage. Add the lifetime battery warranty, impressive claimed range and competitive starting price of ₹18.79 lakh, and the package becomes even more compelling.

No, this isn't a road test, so the final verdict on ride quality, handling and efficiency will have to wait until we get behind the wheel. But based purely on what Tata has brought to the table, the Sierra EV looks like one of the most complete electric SUVs the company has ever built.

Editorial note: Once road tests begin, the biggest questions will revolve around real-world range, charging speeds, software responsiveness and ride comfort. If the Sierra delivers on those fronts as convincingly as it does on paper, Tata Motors may well have another blockbuster on its hands.
