A new generation Jeep Renegade is currently under development and is scheduled to arrive by 2027, as confirmed by Stellantis during its recent investor day presentation. While the company has not disclosed many details, it has been confirmed that a low-cost version is being developed based on Citroen’s Common Modular Platform (CMP), which also underpins its C3 range of cars in India. The official name of this Citroen-based Jeep model in India is yet to be decided.
Shift to Citroen’s Common Modular Platform (CMP)
Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares, in an interview with Autocar UK, highlighted the advantages of the CMP, stating, “That platform has the capability to be sourced all over the world, with simpler solutions that make it much more cost-competitive than anything else we can find in the western world.” This shift represents a strategic change from the initially planned STLA Small platform to the more cost-effective CMP. This change is in line with the company’s recent switch for the fourth-generation Citroen C3 in Europe to the CMP platform in late 2023.
Introduction of Jeep Renegade Electric 4x4
The new Jeep Renegade will also feature a battery electric model priced under USD 25,000 (about Rs 20.8 lakh). This development emphasises low-cost underpinnings and addresses the brand’s commitment to 4x4 capabilities. Although the CMP does not support an ICE-powered 4x4 drivetrain, it has been adapted to the Smart Car Platform, an electric iteration enabling 4x4 versions. An electric rear axle paired with an ICE-driven front was explored but later abandoned due to cost concerns.
Economies of Scale and Cost Benefits
Utilising a common platform for both Jeep and Citroen brands is expected to result in favourable economies of scale, reducing costs of key modules and components such as the powertrain, E/E architecture, and suspension items. This cost efficiency is projected to allow Jeep to price its new SUV under Rs 15 lakh. Additionally, the E/E architecture is likely to be upgraded to support key ADAS features, which are becoming mainstream in the Indian market.
Potential Powertrain Options for Jeep Renegade
Citroen C3 and C3 Aircross Engine
- 1.2-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol
- Logical fit for new Renegade
- Might be considered underpowered for a ‘Jeep’
Renegade Length and Tax Benefits
- 4.2 metres long
- Does not qualify as a ‘small car’ for tax benefits
- No need for a sub-1.2 litre engine
Alternative Engine Options
- 1.6-litre, four-cylinder engine from the same family
- Cost-effective manufacturing on the same production line
Next-Gen Renegade Engine Choice
- Sophisticated EP6DT 1.6-litre, direct-injection, turbo-petrol engine
- Developed by BMW and PSA
- Multiple power outputs available
- 150hp unit most probable
- Higher-spec 180 hp version possible
- Used in petrol C5 Aircross and other Stellantis models internationally
Expected India Launch?
Although an India launch for the current Renegade was previously considered, it was deemed unviable due to its price and size being too close to the Compass. However, the new Renegade, underpinned by Citroen’s CMP, could finally be launched in India. This move would also compensate for the absence of a new-generation Compass, whose Indian launch plans have been shelved.
