Key Highlights

  • Uno Minda to invest ₹550 crore in new EV powertrain facility in Maharashtra
  • Facility will manufacture Electric Drive Units and Dedicated Hybrid Transmission systems
  • Plant commissioning targeted for Q2 FY28 with phased investment over two years
  • Expansion driven by new orders and rising demand for electrified powertrains

Facility Details and Investment Plan

The new plant will manufacture and assemble high-voltage electric powertrain products. Uno Minda will fund the ₹550 crore investment through a mix of debt and equity. The capital expenditure will occur in phases over the next two years. The company aims to commission the plant in the second quarter of the 2027-28 financial year (Q2 FY28).

The expansion is driven by new orders for EDUs and DHT systems from a key anchor customer. Uno Minda stated that the facility will support the growing demand for advanced electrified powertrains in India.

Strategic Expansion in EV Powertrains

This announcement marks Uno Minda Auto Innovations' second planned EV powertrain facility in recent months. The company is also developing a plant at Khed City in Pune, Maharashtra. The Pune facility is expected to start operations in the second half of the 2026-27 financial year (H2 FY27).

Uno Minda’s expansion aligns with the increasing demand for battery electric vehicles (BEVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and range-extended EVs (REEVs). The company is increasing its manufacturing capacity and broadening its product offerings in EV powertrain technologies.

Focus on Localisation and Technology

Ravi Mehra, Managing Director of Uno Minda Limited, commented on the development. He said the company is expanding both manufacturing capacity and product range in EV powertrain technologies. Uno Minda is also focusing on increasing localisation of high-voltage systems in India.

The company’s strategy supports the government’s push for domestic manufacturing of advanced automotive technologies. By investing in local production, Uno Minda aims to meet rising demand and reduce reliance on imports for key EV components.

Industry Context and Future Outlook

The Indian automotive industry is witnessing a shift towards electrification. Demand for advanced powertrain systems is rising as automakers introduce more electric and hybrid vehicles. Uno Minda’s new facility is expected to play a significant role in supporting this transition.

With two EV powertrain plants planned in Maharashtra, Uno Minda is positioning itself as a key supplier for the growing electric vehicle market in India. The company’s phased investment approach and focus on localisation may help accelerate the adoption of advanced electrified powertrains in the country.
