About MRF Tyres

MRF or Madras Rubber Factory Limited is the largest tyre manufacturing company of India. In the fiscal year 2023, MRF Tyres reported an impressive annual revenue of ₹228.51 billion. K. M. Mammen Mappillai led the foundation of Madras Rubber Factory in 1946 as a rubber balloon factory at Tiruvottiyur in Chennai with meagre funding of Rs 14000. In 1952, the brand started manufacturing rubber products, and it became a public limited company on 1st April 1961.

From November 1960 onwards MRF commenced tyre production with a partnership with Ohio based company Mansfield Tire & Rubber. The brand came up with an export office in Beirut, Lebanon in 1964 to cater to the international market. It was the same time when the company logo ‘the muscleman’ came into existence. 

In 1963, MRF laid the foundation of the Rubber Research Centre at Tiruvottiyur. The first prime minister of India, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru was present at the occasion. In 1967, MRF was the first tyre brand from India to export its products to the USA.

In 1973, MRF started producing synthetic tyres, and in 1978 it launched a joint venture with B.F. Goodrich. The brand also ventured into a technical collaboration with the famed Italian brand Marangoni TRS SPA for the manufacturing of pre-cured tread rubber.

In 1978, MRF started producing sturdy heavy-duty Tyres for trucks- MRF Superlug 78.
