Mileage of Automatic vs Manual Transmission Cars: Which is better?

Transmission systems influence a vehicle's performance, driving dynamics, and fuel efficiency. When deciding between automatic and manual gearbox vehicles, it is critical to understand how each affects mileage.

Earlier Manual Transmission in cars used to offer better mileage compared to automatic. But after advancement in technology and more gears in the automatic transmission improved fuel efficiency better than the Manual. Generally automatic car variants cost more than the manual and the maintenance cost is high as well. So here in this guide we will understand about the transmission type and how it affects the fuel efficiency. On top of that we have added a real life mileage comparison of a car with different variants.

Basics of Transmission Systems

Mileage of Automatic vs Manual Transmission Cars: Which is better?

Manual Transmission (MT)

The driver can change gear ratios to maneuver the vehicle using a manual transmission. Higher gear ratios offer more acceleration and less torque, whereas lower gear ratios supply the much-needed torque and less acceleration. The terms "6-speed gearbox" and "5-speed gearbox" refer to these ratios, which are also known as "speeds." The car's engine may deliver power to the wheels at varying rates thanks to the gearbox or transmission.

To move the vehicle from one place to another, a driver must engage two physical components of the vehicle. These components, which cannot function independently and need the driver's input, include the clutch pedal and the gear shifter.

The friction clutch decouples the engine from the gearbox when the driver presses the clutch pedal. The engine and gearbox keep running when the clutch pedal is depressed, but they are not connected to each other. This makes it possible for the driver to change gears and extract the necessary energy to transfer power to the wheels.

Automatic Transmission (AT)

When using an automated gearbox, the driver still has some control over the vehicle, although it is far less than when using a manual gearbox. This is because there are fewer mechanical components that need to be used.

There are no parts like the gear lever or clutch pedal. All the heavy work is done by the car when the driver engages the shifter to the "D" mode, which indicates the drive mode. The gearbox uses fluid pressure to shift gears automatically.

The planetary gear set, which generates various gear ratios to supply power to the wheels, is the primary component of the automatic gearbox. The automatic gearbox fluid applies the pressure needed to engage the clutch and gear ratios. It allows the car to go forward or backward by cooling and lubricating moving parts. The accelerator pedal is the only input required from the driver to move the car; the shift of gears occurs automatically.

Types of automatic transmissions include

  • Torque Converter (Traditional Automatic): Uses hydraulic coupling for gear shifts.
  • CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission): Offers seamless gear changes with a belt-and-pulley system.
  • DCT (Dual-Clutch Transmission): Employs two clutches for faster shifts.
  • AMT (Automated Manual Transmission): A manual gearbox with an automated clutch system.

Factors Affecting Mileage

Driving Efficiency

Manual

  • Higher mileage when driven efficiently because the driver has full control over gear changes.
  • Poor mileage if gears are used improperly, such as over-revving or staying in low gears too long.

Automatic

  • Modern automatics (especially CVT and AMT) are designed for optimal fuel efficiency.
  • Older torque converter automatics are less fuel-efficient due to energy loss during gear changes.

Weight

Automatic transmissions often add extra weight to a vehicle, reducing fuel economy compared to their manual counterparts.

Driving Conditions

  • Automatics generally perform better in stop-and-go traffic as they eliminate clutch operation and gear shifting, optimizing fuel use.
  • Manuals offer better mileage on highways as they allow the driver to maintain control over engine RPM.

Engine Load

  • Automatic transmissions often adjust to maintain smoother shifts, sometimes consuming slightly more fuel.
  • Manual transmissions can reduce unnecessary load if driven skillfully.

The manual variants with a 5-speed gearbox deliver around 15 kmpl, while the 6-speed manual gearbox versions return about 15.4 kmpl. The automatic variants with a 6-speed AMT gearbox offer around 17.18 kmpl.

Advantages and Disadvantages

Manual Transmission

Advantages

  • Potential for higher mileage if driven skillfully.
  • Lower initial cost and maintenance expenses.
  • Better control over vehicle dynamics.

Disadvantages

  • Learning curve for new drivers.
  • Tiresome in heavy traffic.

Automatic Transmission

Advantages

  • Consistent performance in varying conditions.
  • Reduced driver fatigue in urban traffic.
  • Advanced types like CVT and AMT rival manual mileage.

Disadvantages

  • Higher initial and maintenance costs.
  • Slight mileage drop in older models (e.g., torque converters).

CarBike360 Says: Which is Better for Mileage?

  • Manual transmission typically delivers better mileage when driven by experienced drivers.
  • Modern automatics like CVT and AMT now match or exceed manual transmissions in efficiency due to advancements in technology.
  • Your choice should depend on your driving conditions, comfort preferences, and budget.

Pro Tips for Maximizing Mileage

Manual Cars

  • Shift gears at optimal RPMs.
  • Avoid over-revving or staying in lower gears unnecessarily.
  • Use engine braking to save fuel.

Automatic Cars

  • Use "Eco" driving mode when available.
  • Avoid aggressive acceleration and braking.
  • Keep tires properly inflated to reduce rolling resistance.
