The group was founded by the Munjal brothers in 1956 with the establishment of Hero Cycles Limited. The group later entered into a joint venture with Honda Motor Company in 1984 to form Hero Honda Motors Limited, which became the world's largest two-wheeler manufacturer. 

The joint venture was terminated in 2010 and the group rebranded itself as Hero MotoCorp Limited.
