This refreshed flagship SUV brings updated styling, more tech, and a refined driving experience, making it one of the most well-rounded premium seven-seaters on sale today.

First Drive Review

Volvo’s approach to luxury has always been different — quieter, more thoughtful, and rooted in Scandinavian simplicity. With the newly launched 2025 Volvo XC90, that philosophy feels stronger than ever.

Design: Subtle Changes, Stronger Identity

At first glance, the XC90 doesn’t scream for attention — it commands it. The facelift brings a reworked grille with diagonal chrome elements, sleeker LED headlamps with Volvo’s signature Thor’s Hammer DRLs, and a cleaner overall front profile. The tweaks are small but meaningful, giving the SUV more presence without losing its understated charm.

New 20-inch alloys and mildly updated tail-lamps complete the exterior refresh. The proportions remain elegant, and the upright silhouette continues to be one of the most recognisable designs in the luxury SUV segment. Colors like the new deep red shade add warmth to the palette, while classics like black and blue remain.

Cabin & Comfort: Quiet Luxury, Done Right

Step inside, and the XC90 envelops you in the kind of calm only Volvo can create. The dashboard features minimalist Scandinavian design with soft-touch materials and elegant finishes. The new upholstery options, especially the eco-friendly Nordico trim, feel premium and modern.

The highlight remains the crystal gear selector — a small detail, but one that instantly elevates the cabin’s ambience.

The updated infotainment setup includes a crisp 12.3-inch digital cluster and a larger, Google-powered 11.2-inch touchscreen. The interface supports OTA updates, built-in Google Maps, Assistant, and app support. While the software feels polished, occasional lag can surface — though not enough to spoil the experience.

Comfort is outstanding. The front and rear seats get ventilation, heating, and even massage functions. The second-row comfort is excellent, and the panoramic sunroof adds to the airy feel. The third row is best suited for kids or shorter journeys but is perfectly usable.

Safety and convenience tech is abundant: 360-camera, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, collision mitigation, and an efficient cabin air purification system.

Driving Experience: Relaxed, Refined, Confident

Powering the XC90 is a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol mild-hybrid engine that produces around 250hp and 360Nm. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The combination delivers smooth, predictable acceleration and a comfortable, breezy driving character.

The air suspension is a standout. It absorbs broken patches beautifully while keeping the SUV stable at high speeds. The system can even raise the ground clearance for rougher terrain. Steering feel is light but precise — ideal for city driving and long-distance cruising.

Performance is not aggressive; instead, it’s composed and mature. The mild-hybrid system helps fill torque gaps, making the XC90 feel responsive in everyday conditions. Fuel efficiency isn’t a selling point, but the hybrid assistance does help in urban commute scenarios.

Practicality: A Real Seven-Seater

The XC90 remains one of the few genuine seven-seater luxury SUVs. The third row, while not the roomiest, works well for children or occasional adult use. Boot space is generous, and with the last row folded, the SUV becomes a long-weekend luggage champion.

Clever storage spaces, wide-opening doors, and an airy cabin layout reinforce its family-friendly positioning.

Where It Could Improve

No luxury vehicle is perfect, and the XC90 has a few areas that could be better:

Verdict: One of the Most Complete Luxury SUVs in India

The 2025 Volvo XC90 doesn’t rely on flashy gimmicks or aggressive styling. Instead, it builds upon its strengths — comfort, safety, refinement, design, and usability. The result is a luxury SUV that feels calm, confident, and deeply satisfying to drive.

If you’re looking for a premium seven-seater that prioritises elegance over excess, and comfort over outright performance, the new XC90 emerges as one of the most compelling choices in its class.
