In a surprising move, Apple has decided to terminate its electric vehicle (EV) project, known internally as Project Titan. The ambitious endeavor, which spanned over a decade, aimed to develop and market Apple's own electric car. The decision was announced during an internal meeting led by Apple COO Jeff Williams and Kevin Lynch, the vice president overseeing the project.

Shift to the Artificial Intelligence Division

As part of the project's termination, Apple plans to wind down the EV efforts and redirect many employees from the Special Projects Group to the company's artificial intelligence (AI) division. Apple has been actively investing in AI, having acquired over 20 startups in the field since 2017. The move reflects Apple's strategic shift in focus towards AI technology integration in its products.

Layoffs Expected as Nearly 2,000 Employees Affected

The closure of the EV project has significant consequences for the nearly 2,000 employees who were dedicated to Project Titan. Among them were car designers and hardware engineers who now face potential layoffs. Although employees are encouraged to apply for positions within the company, the scale of the project's termination suggests a significant reshuffling of personnel.

A Decade-Long Headache for Apple

Project Titan has been a challenging venture for Apple, marked by leadership changes, strategic shifts, and persistent delays. Originally envisioned as a groundbreaking electric car with advanced self-driving features, the project faced setbacks, leading to a revised release date of 2028 and a lowered price target of $100,000 from the initial $120,000.

Industry Challenges and Musk's Reaction

The decision to exit the electric car market highlights the challenges of the automotive industry, known for low margins and intense competition. While Apple's withdrawal is seen as a setback for the tech giant, Tesla CEO Elon Musk celebrated the news. Musk, who has been critical of Apple's automotive ambitions, expressed his reaction on X, his social media platform, with a saluting emoji followed by a cigarette emoji.

Tesla's Potential Advantage

Tesla, one of the largest players in the EV market, stands to benefit from Apple's exit. Musk's acknowledgment of the challenges involved in volume production suggests that Apple's departure from the electric car sector may provide Tesla with a competitive advantage. As Apple shifts its focus to AI, the electric vehicle market remains a crucial arena for companies striving to lead in innovation and profitability.
