BYD Yuan UP Electric SUV Approved in China

In a surprising turn of events, details about BYD's upcoming compact electric SUV, the Yuan UP, has surfaced before its official launch. The leak, came from authorized documents, providing a sneak peek into what could be a significant player in the compact SUV segment, rivalling the likes of Hyundai Creta EV and the upcoming Tata Curvv EV.

Unlike its Indian counterpart ARAI, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in China takes a bold approach by revealing not only the technical details but also the pictures of the car undergoing regulatory processes. This method, though informative, tends to rob the car buyers of the suspense that’s traditionally associated with a new launch.

BYD Yuan UP Specs and Performance Unveiled

The BYD Yuan UP, electric SUV promises to be a game-changer with a 5-seat configuration and dimensions of 4,310 mm (length), 1,830 mm (width), and 1,675 mm (height), featuring a 2,620 mm wheelbase. This SUV will also offer two powertrain options: the TZ180XSF equipped with a 70-kW motor and the TZ200XSW featuring a more powerful 130-kW motor. 

Manufactured by Hefei BYD Automobile Co., this electric motor is complemented by a battery pack supplied by the Wuwei Findream Co., both subsidiaries of BYD. With a curb weight ranging from 1430 kg to 1540 kg, this SUV boasts of a top speed of around 160 km/h.

Design Inspirations and Optional Features

Drawing styling cues from the recently unveiled Song L electric crossover SUV, the BYD Yuan UP doesn't just focus on performance. 

Optional features may include a panoramic sunroof and a sleek rear spoiler. Wheel options come in 16-inch and 17-inch variants, paired with 215/65 and 215/60 tires, respectively.

BYD Yuan UP Launch and Expected Price

The BYD Yuan UP is set to be the smallest EV in its range, joining the lineup of the existing Yuan sub-brand. It is anticipated to launch in the first half of CY2024, the SUV is expected to have a starting price of approximately Rs 11.72 lakh in India. 

BYD's strategic sourcing of core components from its subsidiaries allows the company to offer an affordable price point, making the Yuan UP a formidable competitor against the existing players like MG ZS EV and upcoming rivals that includes Hyundai Creta EV, Mahindra BE.05, Maruti Suzuki eVX, and Tata Curvv EV. The Indian electric vehicle market is about to witness a new contender, and the BYD Yuan UP is poised to make a lasting impression.
