India’s electric four-wheeler market continued to build momentum in May 2026, with OEM-wise sales showing a healthy monthly rise and a few notable shifts in brand performance. Tata Motors kept its commanding lead, while Mahindra & Mahindra and JSW MG Motor India stayed firmly in the hunt, underlining how competitive the EV passenger-car market has become.

The latest sales snapshot also shows that the segment is no longer driven by just one or two players. Maruti Suzuki, BYD, Mercedes-Benz, and even emerging names such as VinFast added to the month’s broader growth story, while some established brands faced a softer month compared with April. Overall, the report points to a market that is still expanding, but with ranking pressure rising across the board.

Electric Four-Wheeler Market Overview May 2026

The data for May 2026 shows total E-4W registrations at 26,226 units, up from 25,266 units in April 2026, marking a gain of 3.8% month on month. Tata Motors led the chart with 10,236 units and a 39% market share, followed by Mahindra & Mahindra at 6,134 units and 23.4% share, while JSW MG Motor India finished third with 4,935 units and 18.8% share.

Rank 1: Tata Motors

Tata Motors finished May 2026 at the top of the OEM-wise E-4W sales chart with 10,236 units, up from 9,290 units in April, a gain of 946 units or 10.2 percent. Its market share stood at 39 percent, clearly ahead of the rest of the field.

That kind of lead does not happen by accident. Tata continues to benefit from a wide EV portfolio, strong brand recall in the mass-market electric space, and a product strategy that speaks to both first-time EV buyers and established urban customers. In a segment that still rewards scale, Tata’s consistency remains its biggest strength.

Rank 2: Mahindra & Mahindra

Mahindra & Mahindra secured the second position with 6,134 units in May, compared with 5,853 units in April. The company added 281 units month on month, marking a 4.8 percent increase and taking a 23.4 percent share of the market.

This is a meaningful result because Mahindra has been steadily building its EV presence while also deepening its SUV-led identity in India. The brand’s momentum suggests that buyers are responding to its design language, SUV positioning, and growing electric roadmap, even as Tata remains the benchmark.

Rank 3: MG Motors

JSW MG Motor India ranked third with 4,935 units in May, down from 5,409 units in April. That represents a decline of 474 units, or 8.8 percent, though its 18.8 percent market share still keeps it very close to Mahindra’s overall footprint.

Despite the monthly dip, MG remains one of the most important names in India’s electric car market. The brand has been pushing hard with product-led differentiation and strong EV positioning, and recent market reports have shown that its broader sales momentum in India remains resilient even amid supply-chain pressure.

Rank 4: Maruti Suzuki

Maruti Suzuki India recorded one of the sharpest percentage improvements among larger OEMs, rising to 1,577 units from 1,330 units in April. That 18.6% jump took its market share to 6 percent, which is still modest in absolute terms but important for a brand traditionally associated with internal combustion models.

Rank 5: VinFast Auto

VinFast Auto India posted 1,224 units in May, slightly lower than April’s 1,288 units. VinFast Auto India secured fifth place with 1,224 units, slipping 64 units, or 5%, from the previous month. Even so, the figure is notable for a newer player still working to establish itself in India. Its 4.7% share shows that the brand has begun to appear on the EV radar, though the road to scale remains competitive.

Rank 6: BYD

BYD India, on the other hand, climbed to 683 units from 549 units, a solid 24.4 percent rise that shows continued traction for the Chinese EV maker in India’s premium and tech-focused buyer groups. That is one of the better sequential gains in the table and points to improving demand for the brand’s electric offerings. With a 2.6% share, BYD continues to strengthen its position as a relevant premium EV player in India

Rank 7: Hyundai Motors

Hyundai Motor India fell to 454 units from 559 units, while Kia India matched Hyundai at 345 units, though both brands saw month-on-month declines. The brand’s 1.7% share shows that it is still participating in the EV race, but not yet at the pace of the market leaders

Rank 8: BMW

Among premium manufacturers, BMW India reported 345 units in May, almost flat versus April’s 348 units. With 1.3% share, BMW remains a consistent luxury EV presence, supported by a buyer base that values brand prestige, technology, and strong product positioning.

Rank 9: Kia

Kia India matched BMW India in volume at 345 units, but it slipped 57 units and 14.2% compared with April. Its 1.3% share shows that Kia remains active in the EV market, though the month was softer than expected. The performance suggests a transitional phase as the brand works to sustain momentum in a highly competitive segment.

Rank 10: Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz AG, however, delivered one of the strongest month-on-month gains in the chart, climbing to 204 units from 117 units, a sharp 74.4 percent rise. Even with a 0.8% share, the improvement is important for the luxury EV market. The result highlights rising interest in premium electric mobility and stronger retail momentum for Mercedes-Benz.

Rank 11: Tesla India

Tesla India registered 35 units in May 2026, down from 43 in April, which meant an 18.6% decline. Its 0.1% share is still very small, but the brand’s presence continues to attract attention because of its global reputation. The numbers show that Tesla remains in an early phase of building awareness, volume, and customer reach in India.

Rank 12: Volvo Auto

Volvo Auto India recorded 28 units in May 2026, down 16 units from April for a 36.4% decline. The brand’s 0.1% share places it near the lower end of the table, but Volvo still retains a place in India’s luxury EV mix. The month reflects softer demand, though its premium positioning keeps it relevant in the segment.

Rank 13: Other Brands

The “Others” category closed the list with 26 units in May 2026, down eight units and 23.5% from the previous month. Its 0.1% share indicates a very small contribution, but it still captures smaller OEMs and niche players in the market. The figure underlines how concentrated India’s E-4W segment remains, with most volume concentrated among leading brands.

Market Outlook

The total OEM-wise E-4W market reached 26,226 units in May 2026, up from 25,266 units in April, an increase of 960 units or 3.8 percent. The growth may not look dramatic, but in a market segment where monthly swings are common, sustained expansion is a positive sign.

CarBike 360 Says

The May 2026 electric four-wheeler sales highlight a dynamic shift in India’s EV space, with Tata Motors continuing its dominance while Mahindra strengthens its foothold in second position. As competition intensifies and new models enter the market, the coming months are expected to further reshape rankings, signaling steady growth and increasing consumer confidence in electric mobility.
