Electric vehicle (EV) sales in Gujarat have risen sharply, driven by government incentives and concerns over fuel prices. Recent geopolitical tensions in West Asia led to rumors of fuel shortages in March, influencing buyers to consider EVs over petrol and CNG vehicles. This trend continued into April, with EVs gaining a larger share of the market.
Key Highlights
- EVs reached nearly 21 percent of two-wheeler sales in Gujarat in April-May
- Passenger car sales in Gujarat grew 21 percent year-on-year in April
- Government incentives and fuel price concerns drive EV adoption
- Premium vehicle waiting periods extend up to six months
EV Sales Growth in Gujarat
Data from the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways shows that EVs accounted for 4.3 percent of total two-wheeler sales in 2025-26. This figure rose to nearly 21 percent in April-May this year. For electric cars, the share increased from 3.8 percent to 6.1 percent over the same period. These numbers highlight a significant shift in consumer preference towards electric vehicles in the state.
State and central government incentives have played a key role in this transition. The PM E-DRIVE scheme continues to provide subsidies for electric two-wheelers until July 2026. These subsidies make EVs more affordable, encouraging both consumers and manufacturers to invest in electric mobility.
Factors Driving Demand
Pranav Shah, chairperson of the Federation of Automobile Dealers’ Association (FADA) Gujarat, noted that government support and fears of rising petrol prices have accelerated demand for electric two-wheelers. The ongoing conflict between Iran, Israel, and the US has contributed to uncertainty about fuel availability, further boosting EV sales.
For car buyers, savings remain a primary motivation. Many families purchase EVs as second vehicles, attracted by improved technology, greater reliability, and faster charging times. The recent rumors of fuel shortages have prompted more buyers to consider EVs as a way to ensure mobility and manage long-term costs.
Passenger Car Market Trends
Gujarat saw the sale of 35,452 passenger cars in April this year, marking a 21 percent increase compared to 29,175 units in the same period last year. This growth rate surpasses the national average, which stands at 12 percent. Demand spans from entry-level SUVs to premium models, with waiting periods for vehicles like the Fortuner and HyCross extending up to six months.
The sub-4-meter compact SUV segment remains highly competitive, offering buyers a wide range of choices. Despite some market fluctuations due to stock market sentiment and longer decision cycles, overall demand for cars in Gujarat remains strong and broad-based.

As fuel prices continue to strain household budgets, Gujarat’s shift toward electric mobility reflects a larger change in consumer mindset. With improving infrastructure, government incentives, and growing awareness, EV adoption is expected to accelerate further. This surge not only supports sustainable transportation but also positions Gujarat as a key contributor to India’s rapidly evolving electric vehicle landscape.
