In a groundbreaking announcement, Hyundai Motors India Limited (HMIL) sets its sights on achieving 100% renewable energy consumption by the year 2025, positioning itself as a front-runner in the race for sustainability among automakers.
Commitment to RE100
Declaring its commitment to the RE100 initiative by Climate Group, Hyundai Motors India has already achieved an impressive 64% of its energy requirements through renewable sources. The company aims to surpass its competitors by attaining the RE100 mark ahead of schedule.
Energy Management Systems
Hyundai's systematic approach includes comprehensive energy management systems across its operations. Noteworthy measures include the adoption of 100% LED lighting since 2017, thermo ceramic coatings, waste heat recovery, and other initiatives, resulting in the conservation of 19,200 Tonnes of Oil Equivalent (TOE).
Reduction in Carbon Emissions
To curb carbon emissions, Hyundai Motors India closely monitors both direct and indirect emissions. The installation of a 10 MW solar plant at its Chennai facility, the conversion of propane to LNG, and the purchase of green power from the Indian Energy Exchange contribute to a 64% renewable energy portfolio. The company proudly announces a reduction of 1,02,060 tonnes of CO2 emissions and sets a target to further reduce it by 1,61,940 tonnes in the next five years.
Water Management
Hyundai employs a zero-liquid discharge system, with six large water reservoirs at its Chennai plant holding 3,50,000 metric tonnes of water. Rainwater harvesting and recycled RO water contribute to 80% water neutrality and a 30% reduction in overall water usage.
Harmful Substance Management
Adhering to domestic laws and global standards, Hyundai successfully reduces hazardous and non-hazardous wastes through innovative measures like screw press filters. Over the last five years, the company has achieved a 19.4% reduction in hazardous wastes and a 14.3% reduction in non-hazardous wastes.
Expanding EV Lineup
Hyundai's commitment to sustainability extends to its product portfolio, with plans to invest Rs. 32,000 Crores in expanding its electric vehicle lineup over the next decade, starting from 2023.

Mr. Gopala Krishnan CS, Chief Manufacturing Officer at HMIL, emphasized the company's unwavering dedication to sustainability and energy conservation. He stated, "Our operations are driven by a strong sense of responsibility towards the environment and our communities," outlining Hyundai's holistic approach towards sustainable development goals.
