Carmakers to Unveil Flex-Fuel Vehicles on World Environment Day
Maruti Suzuki, Toyota, Mahindra, and Tata will showcase E100-compatible flex-fuel vehicles on World Environment Day. The government is also testing hydrogen-powered vehicles, including the Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo.

On World Environment Day, major carmakers will present E100-compatible flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs) in India. Maruti Suzuki will lead the showcase, followed by Toyota, Mahindra, and Tata. This announcement came from Nitin Gadkari, the Minister of Road Transport and Highways, during a recent speech.
Key Highlights
- Maruti Suzuki, Toyota, Mahindra, and Tata to showcase flex-fuel vehicles on 5 June
- Minister Nitin Gadkari highlights ethanol, electric, and hydrogen as future fuels for India
- Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo hydrogen vehicles are under government pilot testing
Automakers Present Flex-Fuel Vehicles
The minister stressed the urgent need for sustainable mobility solutions in India. He highlighted the role of FFVs in reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Maruti Suzuki is expected to display its FFV models first. Toyota, Mahindra, and Tata will follow with their own offerings.
Industry observers expect Maruti Suzuki to present the Fronx FFV. The Fronx FFV was previously showcased at the Japan Mobility Show in 2023. There is also speculation about the Urban Cruiser Taisor FFV from Toyota. Some believe Maruti Suzuki may also display a Wagon-R FFV, but the Fronx remains the most likely candidate.
Future Fuels and Ongoing Tests
During his speech, Nitin Gadkari discussed the future of automotive fuels. He identified ethanol, electric vehicles (EVs), and hydrogen as key alternatives. The government is currently conducting pilot tests on hydrogen-based powertrains.
Two hydrogen-powered vehicles are under comprehensive testing in India. These are the Toyota Mirai and the Hyundai Nexo. The results of these tests will help determine the viability of hydrogen as a fuel source for vehicles in India.
Industry Implications
The move to showcase FFVs aligns with India's push for cleaner mobility. Ethanol-blended fuels and alternative technologies are part of the government's long-term strategy. Updates on hydrogen vehicle tests are expected soon, which may influence future policy decisions.
