The Indian government is advancing its push for higher ethanol blends in petrol vehicles, aiming to reach E100 in the future. On the day of the BioFlex hatchback unveiling, Nitin Gadkari, Minister of Road Transport and Highways, and Hardeep Singh Puri, Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, attended the event. The BioFlex hatchback represents a mass-market, entry-level flex-fuel vehicle (FFV) designed to support higher ethanol content in fuel.

Key Highlights

  • BioFlex hatchback unveiled with support for up to E85 ethanol blend
  • Engine components modified to handle higher ethanol content in fuel
  • Government urges introduction of Euro 6-compliant flex-fuel vehicles

BioFlex Hatchback Features

The BioFlex hatchback's exterior design remains unchanged from its standard version. The vehicle displays a Flex Fuel decal, though this marking may not appear on the production model. When the fuel lid is opened, an E85 badge is visible, indicating the car can run on petrol with up to 85 percent ethanol. This makes the BioFlex compatible with a wide range of ethanol blends.

Engine components in the BioFlex have been modified to handle high ethanol content. In the engine bay, several plastic parts have been thickened to withstand the effects of ethanol. However, the manufacturer has not yet released technical specifications for the vehicle.

Government Policy and Industry Direction

The Indian government continues to promote higher ethanol blends in petrol-powered vehicles. Officials cite reduced dependence on fuel imports as a key benefit. Increased ethanol production could also help India become more self-reliant in energy.

During the unveiling, Minister Gadkari suggested that carmakers should consider introducing Euro 6-compliant vehicles in India. He proposed that these vehicles could be converted to flex-fuel vehicles before their launch in the Indian market. This move would align with the government's strategy to encourage cleaner and more sustainable automotive technologies.

The BioFlex hatchback demonstrates the automotive industry's response to these policy initiatives. By supporting E85 fuel, the vehicle aligns with national goals to reduce fossil fuel use and promote alternative energy sources. The government's ongoing efforts are expected to drive further innovation in flex-fuel vehicle technology in India.
