Maruti Suzuki, the leading automaker in India, has launched the Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) technology in its Grand Vitara compact SUV. AVAS is a crucial pedestrian protection system often incorporated in hybrid and electric vehicles, aiming to address safety concerns related to the silent drive of such vehicles.
Price Hike for Intelligent Hybrid Variants
With the introduction of AVAS tech, the Intelligent Hybrid variants of the Grand Vitara now carry a Rs. 4,000 price increase. Meanwhile, the pricing for Smart Hybrid mild hybrid variants remains unaffected. It's worth noting that only the Intelligent Hybrid models have received the AVAS system, leaving existing Grand Vitara owners curious about the possibility of retrofitting this safety feature.
Silent Drive and Pedestrian Safety
Hybrid and electric vehicles are known for their silent operation, which can be disconcerting for pedestrians accustomed to the familiar engine sounds of traditional cars. To address this concern, car manufacturers implement artificial sounds inside the cabin through the in-cabin speakers.
AVAS - Ensuring Safety for Pedestrians and Road Users
Considering the impact of silent vehicles on road users and pedestrians, the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS 173) mandates that quiet road transport vehicles (QRTVs) should be equipped with warning systems to alert pedestrians and other drivers. AVAS serves as Maruti Suzuki's response to this requirement, making the Grand Vitara the first vehicle in India to offer this advanced feature.
How Does AVAS Work?
Maruti Suzuki's AVAS functions like an external speaker, emitting low-level and low-frequency alert sounds audible to pedestrians and drivers within a 5-feet radius. The system activates when the Grand Vitara runs in pure electric mode, ensuring pedestrians' safety until the petrol engine engages after depleting the limited pure electric range.
Compliance with AIS 173
As per AIS 173 guidelines, all QRTVs, including vehicles equipped with an electric motor or motor generator, need a pedestrian alerting system when running in pure electric mode. This requirement applies to hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs), and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) in addition to the Grand Vitara Intelligent Hybrid model.
Conclusion
Maruti Suzuki's introduction of AVAS tech in the Grand Vitara demonstrates the automaker's commitment to pedestrian safety and adherence to industry standards. As more hybrid and electric vehicles hit the roads, the implementation of AVAS becomes crucial in ensuring the well-being of pedestrians and enhancing overall road safety.
