The Union Ministry of Road Transport has announced an amendment to the Motor Vehicle Act that will force the cancellation of all government vehicle registrations older than 15 years in order to reduce pollution and advance a circular economy.

Order to cancel the registration of these vehicles

The registration of vehicles that have been renewed (more than 15 years) will likewise be automatically deemed cancelled. All of these outdated vehicles must be recycled at a licenced scrap yard.

Vehicles for the Federal Government, State Governments, Union Territories, Corporations, State Transport, and Public Sector Undertakings (Public Sector Undertakings).

All vehicles older than 15 years must be discarded in Government Autonomous Institutions. Army vehicles are excepted from this, though. The new regulation will take effect on April 1, 2023.

Notably, the Ministry of Road Transport published a draught in November of last year that stated that all vehicles owned by the Central and State Governments that were older than 15 years would need to be demolished.

The buses and vehicles owned by Corporations and the Transport Department were also said to be subject to this law.

The government then had 30 days to receive comments and complaints on the draught. The administration will now put this regulation into effect.

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari stated in November of last year that government vehicles older than 15 years would be recycled into rubbish. The states have received the relevant policy.

He had stated, "Signed a file under the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, under which all Government of India cars above the age of 15 will be scrapped." All of the states have received a copy of this policy, and they should all accept it.

Supreme Court Order on vehicle cancellation

The Transport Department has taken action to prohibit the issuance of fitness permits for commercial vehicles as soon as they reach the age of 15 years in order to ensure compliance with the Hon'ble Supreme Court of India's directives.

It has been noted that a number of vehicles, the specifics of which are shown below, have yet to receive a NO OBJECTION CERTIFICATE attesting to their removal from Delhi despite having reached the age of 15.

These cars are either no longer operable or are being preserved and used in the National Capital Territory of Delhi in defiance of the aforementioned Supreme Court of India directive.

The owner and anyone else in possession of these commercial vehicles is hereby advised to get a No Objection Certificate.

The registration of these cars must be transferred outside of the NCT of Delhi within one month after the notice's publication, or it will be cancelled.

According to Section 55 of the Motor Cars Act of 1988, when this time period has passed, the vehicles are no longer operable and their
