Renesas Electronics has completed the acquisition of Pictorus, a California-based software developer. This move strengthens the Renesas 365 platform by adding behavioral modeling, simulation, and automated code generation for embedded systems. The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Key Highlights
- Renesas acquires California-based software developer Pictorus to enhance Renesas 365 platform
- Integration brings behavioral modelling simulation and automated code generation for embedded systems
- Engineers can design system behavior visually and generate Rust code with browser-based tools
- Acquisition supports faster development cycles and earlier system validation in key industries
Acquisition Expands Digital Engineering
Pictorus specializes in cloud-native tools for embedded software development. By acquiring Pictorus, Renesas aims to enhance its digital engineering capabilities. The integration brings Pictorus' behavioral modeling and simulation technology into Renesas 365, a platform launched to unify electronics system development, software creation, and lifecycle management.
The acquisition comes as software-defined architectures become more important in automotive, industrial, and robotics sectors. These industries now require faster development cycles and earlier system validation. Renesas expects the addition of Pictorus' technology to help meet these demands.
Platform Features and Engineering Benefits
Renesas stated that the integration will allow engineers to visually design system behavior using browser-based block diagrams. This method reduces reliance on traditional coding workflows. The platform can automatically convert these diagrams into executable embedded software using the Rust programming language. It also maintains compatibility with C/C++ and Python environments.
This capability is designed to shorten development timelines and support virtual prototyping in the early stages of product design. According to Leigh Gawne, vice president of R&D and digital industries at Renesas, incorporating Pictorus' features advances system design on Renesas 365 by combining architectural modeling with behavioral modeling and simulation.
Pictorus Background and Strategic Fit
Pictorus was founded in Oakland, California, by engineers with experience in vehicle software development. The company focuses on model-based embedded software development and automated code generation. Its tools aim to simplify the design, debugging, and deployment of embedded systems.
Renesas said the acquisition aligns with its broader digitalization strategy. The company seeks to create a unified platform for electronics system design and lifecycle management by integrating hardware, software, and development workflows. The addition of Pictorus' technology is expected to enhance system-level design capabilities within Renesas 365. This is especially relevant for applications that require software-defined functionality and rapid development cycles.
