Stellantis, a leading global automaker, has taken another leap toward electrification with the introduction of its STLA Frame platform. Designed specifically for large body-on-frame vehicles, this new architecture will underpin future full-size SUVs and pickup trucks in key markets such as North America. This marks the company’s third modular platform, joining the STLA Medium and STLA Large architectures, with a fourth, the STLA Small, set to debut by 2026.
The STLA Frame platform exemplifies Stellantis' commitment to versatility, supporting a range of propulsion systems, including fully electric (BEV), range-extender electric vehicles (REEV), hybrids, internal combustion engines (ICE), and even hydrogen fuel cells. Initial offerings, however, will focus on BEV and REEV configurations to cater to the growing demand for electrified vehicles.
Engineering Excellence
The STLA Frame is built to accommodate the demanding requirements of modern consumers, offering unparalleled range, power, and utility:
- Driving Range: BEV models can achieve a range of up to 800 km, while REEV variants extend this capability to an impressive 1,100 km, addressing range anxiety among consumers.
- Payload and Towing Capacity: The platform offers a payload capacity of up to 1,224 kg and a towing capability of up to 6,350 kg, comparable to the rugged RAM 1500 series.
- Durability and Adaptability: Constructed with advanced high-strength steel, the frame is lightweight yet robust. A widened centre section houses a liquid-cooled battery pack with capacities ranging from 159 kWh to 200 kWh. Reinforced frame rails and a full-length belly pan enhance safety, aerodynamics, and structural integrity.
- Off-Road Features: The platform supports fording depths of up to 610 mm, catering to off-road enthusiasts and heavy-duty applications.
- Suspension Systems: It accommodates advanced suspension setups, including air suspension, to deliver a smooth ride in diverse conditions.
Flexible Dimensions
- Length: 5,488–5,941 mm
- Width: 2,062–2,124 mm
- Wheelbase: 3,143–3,690 mm
- Ground Clearance: 168–262 mm
- Tyre Diameter: up to 838 mm
Performance and Charging Innovation
The STLA Frame platform integrates cutting-edge propulsion and charging technologies to redefine performance and convenience:
- Electric Drive Modules (EDMs): Developed in-house, the front and rear EDMs deliver up to 250 kW each, enabling all-wheel-drive capabilities and acceleration from 0–96 km/h in just 4.4 seconds.
- 800V BEV Architecture: Supporting DC fast charging at up to 350 kW, BEV models can gain 161 km of range in a mere 10 minutes.
- 400V REEV Architecture: REEV configurations allow for charging up to 175 kW, adding 80 km of range in the same time frame.
- Bi-Directional Charging: The platform enables vehicles to supply power back to the grid, power homes during outages, or charge other EVs.
A Modular Vision for the Future
The STLA Frame platform underscores Stellantis' "no compromise" approach to electrification, aiming to meet the diverse needs of customers transitioning to electric vehicles. In a statement, Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares highlighted the company's intent: "With full EV and extended-range EV tech coming soon, we’re bringing ‘no compromise’ solutions to buyers who may be hesitant on trying their first electric vehicle. We’re proud of this engineering marvel and look forward to seeing it come to life in our upcoming product blitz on Jeep and Ram."
The modularity of the STLA Frame extends beyond propulsion, allowing for customization to suit various vehicle types and market demands.
Strategic Electrification
The STLA Frame is a cornerstone of Stellantis' Dare Forward 2030 strategy, which envisions 100% BEV passenger car sales in Europe and 50% BEV sales in the U.S. by the end of the decade. To achieve this, the company is investing over €50 billion in electrification initiatives.
This platform, alongside the STLA Medium and Large architectures, is expected to drive innovation and expand Stellantis' portfolio of electrified vehicles, reinforcing its competitive edge in the EV market.
Conclusion
Stellantis’ unveiling of the STLA Frame platform marks a transformative moment in the development of electrified trucks and SUVs. By offering robust performance, versatility, and advanced features, the platform is poised to meet the expectations of both traditional and new-age consumers. As the company gears up for a product blitz under brands like Jeep and Ram, the STLA Frame sets the stage for a new era in mobility, combining electrification with uncompromised capability.
