Tata Motors has appointed Balaje Rajan as Group Chief Strategy Officer at Jaguar Land Rover (JLR), effective April 1, 2026. This move highlights Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (PV) Group’s focus on global integration and electric vehicle (EV) alignment. Rajan, currently Chief Strategy Officer and Head of International Business at Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility (TPEM), will relocate to the UK and report directly to the JLR Chief Executive Officer. He will also continue to guide TMPV’s strategic collaborations and support international expansion.
Key Highlights
- Balaje Rajan named Group Chief Strategy Officer at Jaguar Land Rover effective April 1, 2026.
- Rajan will relocate to the UK and report to the JLR Chief Executive Officer
- Tata Motors balances in-house EV development with selective use of JLR technologies for Avinya
- The appointment aims to strengthen global integration and international expansion for Tata Motors PV Group
Leadership Transition and Strategic Focus
This leadership change comes as Tata Motors seeks to expand its portfolio and enter the premium EV segment with the Avinya brand. The company is now taking a balanced approach, selectively using JLR’s EV technologies while developing much of the Avinya project in-house. This strategy aims to balance cost and premium features. Rajan’s presence in the UK is expected to strengthen coordination between Tata Motors’ India and global operations.
Balaje Rajan brings experience from both consulting and operational roles within the Tata Group. Before joining Tata Motors, he led the automotive and engineering practice at Tata Strategic Management Group. There, he worked on EV strategy, go-to-market models, battery ecosystem planning, and passenger vehicle turnaround projects for several Tata companies. At TMPV and TPEM, he helped shape an integrated strategy for internal combustion engine (ICE) and EV products and drove the company’s international business roadmap.
Global Expansion and Collaboration
In his new role, Rajan is expected to act as a bridge between TMPV and JLR. He will focus on aligning product strategy, platform direction, and market expansion. He has already contributed to early collaboration efforts, combining JLR’s technology strengths with Tata Motors’ execution capabilities in India.
Rajan’s mandate at TMPV has included building a defined international business strategy. He has evaluated opportunities for Tata Motors’ passenger vehicle portfolio outside India, supporting the group’s goal to expand its global presence. His future responsibilities may include identifying priority markets, shaping go-to-market strategies, and strengthening supply chain links in a changing global environment.
This appointment signals Tata Motors PV Group’s intent to improve alignment of strategy across regions, increase sharing of technologies and platforms, and bring more cohesion to electrification and global expansion plans. The effectiveness of these efforts will depend on organizational alignment, product development support, and market conditions.
