VinFast

According to reports, VinFast, a Vietnamese electric vehicle manufacturer, is in talks to form a joint venture (JV) with Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering & Infrastructures Limited (MEIL) and the Adani Group for its future Tamil Nadu facility. By 2025, the facility is expected to start producing electric vehicles. VinFast's plan to raise a portion of the funds locally and take use of local knowledge in labor relations, regulatory compliance, and building a cost-effective supplier base is what led the company to decide to look for local partnerships.

Local Partnerships Under Discussion

One of the businesses VinFast approached was MEIL, which is well-known for manufacturing electric buses under the Olectra brand with technical assistance from BYD. The Indian government turned down MEIL's prior effort at a joint venture with BYD. Although no official decision has been made, MEIL sources have confirmed that talks with VinFast are still under progress. MEIL's representative chose not to comment on the situation.

Approach to Adani Group

The Adani Group, a multinational business with a major involvement in the infrastructure and energy sectors, has apparently also been contacted by VinFast. Adani hasn't, however, provided any formal confirmation of the discussions. According to sources, talks are still in the exploratory stage and there isn't a formal agreement.

Concerns Over India’s EV Policy

India's new EV policy, which provides temporary import tax discounts to businesses investing $500 million in local manufacture, first piqued VinFast's attention. But according to reports, the corporation is hesitant to commit because of possible legislative limitations that would bar some kinds of investments.

VinFast's Timeline for India

In early 2025, the business intends to exhibit their electric cars at the Bharat Mobility Expo. Even if collaborations are still being worked on, VinFast is still committed to its objective of becoming a major player in the Indian industry.

A spokesperson for VinFast stated:

"As a global company, we explore options for collaborations in various fields and countries. However, we don't comment on market speculations."

MEIL and Olectra’s Current EV Role

With technical support from BYD, the biggest EV manufacturer in China, MEIL's current electric vehicle business is producing electric buses under the Olectra brand. The business is considering VinFast's proposition and has a bus manufacturing plant outside of Hyderabad.

In conclusion

VinFast's possible partnership with Indian behemoths like Adani Group and MEIL has the potential to drastically alter the country's EV market. But since there are no legally enforceable agreements in existence, it is unclear how these talks will turn out.
