Vietnamese EV maker VinFast partners with Israeli AI firm Autobrains in a major strategic move announced on January 27, 2026. This collaboration aims to accelerate the development of affordable autonomous driving for VinFast's electric vehicles, focusing on enhanced L2++ systems and a groundbreaking 'Robo-Car' architecture. By ditching expensive sensors like LiDAR and radar, the partnership promises safer, smarter mobility at a fraction of the cost, potentially revolutionizing entry-level self-driving tech worldwide.

Breakthrough Partnership: Affordable Autonomy Without the High Price Tag

The deal centers on developing advanced Level 2++ (L2++) autonomous driving features for future VinFast BEVs, building on pilot tests already underway for models like the VF 8 and VF 9. The star of the show? Autobrains' innovative Robo-Car system is a camera-based AI architecture powered by 'Liquid AI' technology.

Instead of relying on costly LiDAR, radar arrays, or high-definition maps, Robo-Car uses just seven standard cameras and a powerful compact chip processing around 20 trillion operations per second. This Tesla-inspired, vision-only approach slashes development time and hardware expenses, making higher autonomy accessible to everyday drivers rather than just premium buyers.

VinFast's Global Deputy CEO, Prof.-Dr. Nguyen Van Duong highlighted the vision: making autonomous mobility safe, affordable, and available to all. The companies are currently testing the disruptive Robo-Car in controlled zones in Hanoi, with plans to expand trials globally.

This move comes as VinFast pushes harder into international markets, including the US, where self-driving capabilities could help compete with giants like Tesla amid rising EV competition and cost pressures.

For consumers, this could mean VinFast EVs with more intuitive, reliable driver assistance, think adaptive cruise control, lane centering, and eventual hands-free features without inflating vehicle prices. It's a bold bet on scalable AI to democratize autonomy, especially in emerging markets where affordability is key.

Industry watchers see it as a smart pivot: after years of expensive autonomy pursuits, VinFast is now focusing on cost-effective, real-world-ready tech. Could this help VinFast gain ground in the global EV race?
