BMW is set to introduce the new 5 Series in the Indian market on July 24. Targeting the E-Class LWB as its direct competitor, the new BMW 5 Series will be offered in a long-wheelbase variant for the first time in India. Similar to the E-Class LWB, India will be the second market after China to receive the long-wheelbase version of the 5 Series.

The Blueprint Design

The latest generation BMW 5 Series LWB (long wheelbase) boasts impressive dimensions, measuring 5,175mm in length, 1,900mm in width, and 1,520mm in height, with an extended wheelbase of 3,105mm. Compared to the regular 5 Series sedan, the LWB variant is 145mm longer overall, with 110mm of that additional length dedicated to the wheelbase. While these measurements are specific to the model sold in China, some country-specific modifications are expected for the Indian market, such as a right-hand drive setup and slightly increased ground clearance.

Visually, the new 5 Series LWB is identical to the standard model, with the extended length being the most noticeable difference, similar to the 3 Series Grand Limousine sold in India. Unlike the E-Class LWB, which features a separate quarter glass and a unique door design, the 5 Series LWB's rear door resembles the standard car, without a rear quarter glass.

Consistent with the standard version, the 5 Series LWB sports a similar headlamp and tail-lamp design, as well as an illuminated grille. However, certain variants may feature mild tweaks to the front and rear bumpers. Notably, the 5 Series LWB in China features an illuminated '5' on the C-pillar, adding a unique touch, although this feature is absent on the standard 5 Series.

Expected Features

The 5 Series LWB model offered in China comes equipped with an extensive array of premium features and creature comforts. These include a 4-zone climate control system, quilted upholstery, and a dual-tone interior design. Additionally, it boasts an impressive 31.1-inch display that folds down from the headliner, featuring an 8K resolution and 5G compatibility. Complemented by a Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system, this setup promises an immersive entertainment experience on the go. While the exact specification details for the India-spec model are yet to be confirmed, it is expected that most of these premium features will be carried over.

For BMW in India, the new 5 Series LWB will mark the second long-wheelbase sedan offering, following the popular 3 Series Grand Limousine that was introduced a few years ago. BMW’s new 5 Series LWB will directly compete with the anticipated Mercedes’s all-new E-Class LWB, expected to launch later this year.
