In an unexpected move, the Indian division of Jeep has introduced a reduction in the pricing structure for their most budget-friendly model, the Compass. It came as a surprise, as Jeep India is not known to slash costs or present compelling value propositions. The company’s recent decision is undoubtedly a step in a favourable direction. However, the price reduction does not apply to all variants of the vehicle.

With a mere 4 cm increase in length over the longest compact SUV, the Jeep Compass previously commanded an initial price point that exceeded twice the cost of the most affordable compact SUV. If we consider the base model of the MG Astor priced at Rs. 9.99 lakh, the premium factor of a Jeep Compass became blurred at Rs 10.7 lakh premium. The Compass's argument boiled down to a larger 2.0L diesel engine in its base variant. But at a starting price of Rs 20.69 lakh (Ex-showroom), it was a difficult proposition to accept. Now, Jeep India is lubricating the pill, making it slightly easier for buyers to swallow. The company is offering a price revision of Rs 1.7 lakh (Ex-showroom) on the Compass. Consequently, the Jeep Compass can be acquired for a revised starting price of Rs 18.99 lakh (Ex-showroom). Observing the price-slashing exercise with the base model, one would typically anticipate a similar trend across the rest of the Compass' variant lineup. However, that is not the case at all.

Jeep had recently increased the prices of the Compass SUV by around Rs 14,000 (Ex-showroom) almost uniformly across the range. Now, the price differential between the base Sport 2.0 Diesel MT and the one-above-base Longitude 2.0 Diesel MT, priced at Rs 22.33 lakh (Ex-showroom), is a substantial Rs 3.34 lakh (Ex-showroom). This significant increment used to be much less when the base model price was Rs 20.69 lakh (Ex-showroom). Notable features with the base Sport trim include an 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system, 17-inch monotone alloy wheels, and LED reflector headlights. The trim levels continue to start from Sport, followed by Longitude, Night Eagle, Limited, Black Shark, and Model S.

As of now, the Jeep Compass offers a sole 2.0L 4-cylinder Diesel engine with 170 PS of peak power and 350 Nm of peak torque. This engine is mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 9-speed torque converter. Jeep is also providing a choice between a FWD and AWD drivetrain layout. However, there is no manual AWD configuration available. Jeep is poised to unveil the facelift Meridian, which has been sighted undergoing testing multiple times, equipped with an enhanced ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) suite from Bosch. Logically, the Compass should receive similar updates. Rumours also point to the potential introduction of a petrol engine option in the future, aimed at establishing an attractive and much-needed lower price point for both the Compass and Meridian models. This move is anticipated to provide a boost to sales figures for these vehicle lineups.
