Explore Mahindra's ambitious plan to electrify its entire ICE lineup. Find out more about their upcoming electric models, including the Bolero.e and Scorpio.e, inspired by the success of XUV.e and Thar.e.
Key Highlights:
Mahindra has announced its intention to electrify its entire ICE (internal combustion engine) lineup over time. At an investor presentation, the company reiterated its plans to introduce electric versions of the Bolero and Scorpio, following the trend set by the XUV.e and Thar.e. These new electric models will carry the '.e' suffix.
Challenges and Platform Shifts
The electric versions of the Scorpio and Bolero, referred to as Scorpio.e and Bolero.e, are unlikely to use a ladder-frame chassis. This decision stems from the inherent difficulties of adapting a ladder-frame platform for electric vehicles. Instead, these models may utilize Mahindra’s INGLO skateboard platform, specifically the P1 version, which was first showcased in the Thar.e concept.
Platform Details
The P1 platform is expected to support a wheelbase between 2,775mm and 2,975mm. For comparison, the current Bolero has a wheelbase of 2,680mm, and the Scorpio N has a wheelbase of 2,750mm. This new platform will potentially enhance the dimensions and capabilities of the electric variants.
Powertrain and Battery Specifications
The new Scorpio.e and Bolero.e are likely to share battery packs and motors with other Mahindra EVs. The Thar.e concept featured a 109hp/135Nm front motor and a 286hp/535Nm rear motor, providing all-wheel-drive capability. Although specific battery details were not disclosed, Mahindra indicated options of either a 60kWh or 80kWh battery pack. These configurations are expected to offer a WLTP range of approximately 325km and 435-450km, respectively.
Launch Timeline
While the exact launch dates for the Scorpio.e and Bolero.e remain undisclosed, Mahindra aims to introduce seven new EVs by 2030, with these models likely among them.
Upcoming Diesel Variant
In addition to its electric plans, Mahindra is preparing a complete overhaul for the Bolero diesel variant. The next-generation Bolero will be built on a new ladder-frame architecture, designated U171. This platform will support a range of new SUVs and pickup trucks, with the first model expected by 2026-27.
Volume Projections
The new U171 platform could host at least three SUV models, potentially driving annual volumes to about 1.5 lakh units. As the pickup range transitions to this platform, the total volume could eventually double.
