Renault Kiger – What Is It?

image
Kiger looks well balanced in profile and the face looks aggressive too.

When Renault launched the Kiger, it had a clear objective—offer Indian buyers an SUV that looked exciting, packed plenty of features and didn't stretch the family budget. It was a formula that worked. The Kiger quickly became one of the brand's strongest products, attracting first-time SUV buyers and young families alike.

For 2026, Renault has refined that winning package rather than reinventing it. The Kiger receives cosmetic updates, a more premium cabin, improved equipment and a few thoughtful enhancements that make it feel more mature than before. Thankfully, it continues to offer two petrol engine options, including the lively 1.0-litre turbo-petrol that has always been the pick of the range.

But with rivals becoming increasingly sophisticated, does the Kiger still have what it takes to stand out in one of India's most fiercely contested segments? We spent time with the updated SUV to find out.

Exterior Design: Still One Of The Most Stylish Compact SUVs

Even after a few years on sale, the Kiger continues to turn heads.

Unlike many compact SUVs that rely on excessive cladding and oversized grilles, the Renault has always had a youthful and sporty personality. The latest updates only enhance that appeal.

Sharp looking two-tone alloy wheel design elevates overall look and feel of car.

The redesigned front grille, sharper LED lighting and revised bumper give the Kiger a cleaner and more confident face. The split-headlamp setup remains distinctive, while the sculpted bonnet and silver skid plate reinforce its SUV credentials.

From the side, the Kiger still looks well proportioned. The floating roof design, chunky wheel arches and dual-tone paint options make it appear larger than its dimensions suggest. New alloy wheel designs add freshness without altering the car's familiar silhouette.

At the rear, the LED tail lamps and roof spoiler continue to give the SUV a sporty finish. It isn't an over-styled design, but it has enough character to stand apart in a crowded parking lot.

Simply put, this is still one of the better-looking compact SUVs you can buy.

Interior Design And Cabin Quality: A Step In The Right Direction

Step inside, and the improvements are immediately noticeable.

The dashboard layout remains familiar, but Renault has worked on the materials and overall presentation. New upholstery, improved trim finishes and subtle design changes make the cabin feel more upmarket than before.

Interior remains largely unchanged except addition of new colour scheme.

The driving position is excellent. You sit high enough to enjoy that commanding SUV view, while all the major controls are within easy reach. Visibility is also impressive, making the Kiger an easy SUV to drive through busy city traffic.

The touchscreen infotainment system is responsive and supports wireless smartphone connectivity, while the fully digital instrument cluster remains one of the highlights of the cabin.

There are still a few hard plastic surfaces, but that's hardly surprising at this price point. More importantly, the overall fit and finish feel reassuringly solid.

Space And Practicality: Bigger On The Inside Than You'd Expect

One of the Kiger's biggest strengths has always been how cleverly it uses its compact footprint. The front seats are comfortable enough for long journeys, with good cushioning and a relaxed driving position.

Rear-seat passengers are equally well catered for. Legroom is generous for the segment, while headroom remains excellent despite the stylish roofline. Two adults can travel in complete comfort, and even three passengers can manage shorter trips without feeling overly cramped.

Despite being under 4-metres in length, the rear seats offer good space and comfort.

The Kiger also offers one of the largest boots in its class. Whether you're planning a weekend getaway or a trip to the airport, luggage space is unlikely to be a concern.

Add plenty of storage compartments throughout the cabin, and it's clear that practicality has been a major focus.

Engine And Performance: The Turbo Is The One To Have

The Kiger is available with two 1.0-litre petrol engines, but if your budget allows, the turbocharged version is easily the better choice.

Producing enough power to feel genuinely energetic, the turbo engine transforms the Kiger's personality. It feels eager off the line, pulls strongly through the mid-range and has enough performance in reserve for confident highway overtakes.

1-litre turbo mated to the CVT-automatic gearbox is the one to go for.

The naturally aspirated engine, on the other hand, is better suited to buyers who spend most of their time in city traffic. It's smooth and easy to drive, but it doesn't feel quite as enthusiastic once speeds begin to rise.

The CVT automatic deserves praise for its smoothness. Unlike some transmissions that feel hesitant under acceleration, this one complements the turbo engine well and makes daily commuting remarkably effortless.

Fuel efficiency remains another strong point, making the Kiger an economical companion whether you're driving in the city or on longer highway journeys.

Ride And Handling: Built For Indian Roads

If there's one area where the Kiger continues to impress, it's ride quality.

Renault has always been known for tuning its suspension to suit Indian conditions, and the Kiger is no exception.

Broken roads, potholes and speed breakers are dealt with confidently, allowing occupants to remain comfortable even when the surface deteriorates.

The suspension feels slightly firmer than some rivals, but that pays dividends on the highway. The SUV feels composed at cruising speeds and inspires confidence around sweeping bends.

The steering is light enough for city driving while offering decent feedback once you're out on the open road. It's not an SUV that encourages aggressive cornering, but it remains predictable and enjoyable to drive.

Overall, the Kiger strikes a fine balance between comfort and stability.

Features And Safety: More Than Just The Basics

Renault has ensured that the Kiger doesn't feel outdated when it comes to equipment.

Depending on the variant, buyers get a large touchscreen infotainment system, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, automatic climate control, wireless charging, push-button start, cruise control, ambient lighting and connected car technology.

Safety has also received attention, with multiple airbags, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, tyre pressure monitoring and a strong body structure helping to inspire confidence.

It's a feature list that comfortably meets the expectations of modern buyers without pushing the price into premium territory.

Verdict: Still One Of The Smartest Choices In The Segment

The Renault Kiger has always been easy to recommend, and the latest updates only strengthen its appeal.

It looks stylish, offers an impressively spacious cabin, delivers excellent ride comfort and, in turbo-petrol form, provides enough performance to put a smile on your face.

Yes, there are rivals with slightly richer interiors or more powerful engines, but very few manage to offer such a well-rounded package at this price.

What makes the Kiger stand out is its honesty. It doesn't pretend to be a larger SUV, nor does it burden buyers with unnecessary complexity. Instead, it focuses on delivering exactly what most families need—a practical, comfortable and enjoyable compact SUV that feels like great value for money.

If you're shopping in the compact SUV segment and want something that's stylish, efficient and genuinely pleasant to live with, the Renault Kiger deserves to be high on your shortlist.

Final Verdict: 8.7/10

Stylish, comfortable and refreshingly practical, the Renault Kiger continues to prove that you don't have to spend a fortune to own a genuinely likeable SUV.
