After the launch of its compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered two-wheeler, Bajaj Auto is now exploring the potential of vehicles fuelled by compressed biogas (CBG), according to CEO Rajiv Bajaj. The company is also venturing into hydrogen-powered two-wheelers as part of its clean energy initiatives.

“The CNG motorcycle is equally compatible with CBG,” Bajaj said during the Amul Clean Fuel BioCNG Car Rally, which began in Pune on November 15 and will culminate in New Delhi on National Milk Day, November 26. The rally includes stops in Jammu and Kashmir, showcasing the potential of BioCNG as a sustainable fuel alternative.

Highlighting the potential of CBG, Bajaj praised Amul’s initiatives in biogas generation. "The work Amul is doing for CBG production is commendable. If scaled up, as I believe it will be in the coming years, vehicles can also run seamlessly on CBG," he added.

Pioneering Clean Energy in Mobility

Bajaj Auto has been a leader in the cleaner energy space, with its electric and CNG two- and three-wheelers contributing to 44% of its domestic revenue. Since the launch of its CNG two-wheelers in July, the company has sold 26,784 units, according to the Vahan database.

"Half of our domestic business now relies on cleaner energy sources like CNG and electricity. Innovations such as the world's first CNG motorcycle exemplify our commitment to reducing our environmental footprint. The Bajaj Freedom 125, our CNG-powered motorcycle, combines efficiency with sustainability, reflecting these values," Bajaj stated.

Amul’s Role in CBG Development

Amul, the Gujarat-based dairy giant, is actively working to commercialise biogas as a renewable energy source. Speaking at the event, Amul Managing Director Jayesh Mehta emphasised the collaborative efforts with Maruti Suzuki India to establish CBG plants.

"Developing CBG solutions is a win-win situation," Mehta noted. "Farmers gain additional income, and the transportation sector benefits from reduced fuel costs. Scaling CBG production will play a crucial role in transitioning to sustainable energy."

The Road Ahead

With a growing portfolio of clean energy products, Bajaj Auto is driving innovation to balance economic efficiency with environmental sustainability. Its foray into CBG-powered two-wheelers marks another step toward building a greener future for mobility.
