Asia Energy Crisis As Oil Prices Surge
Asia's Energy Crisis As Oil Prices Surge

Asia is experiencing an energy crisis similar to Europe’s transformation after the 1970s oil shocks. Rising oil and gas prices are forcing countries to seek alternatives, which could permanently reshape global energy demand forecasts.

Key Highlights

  • Asia faces energy crisis similar to Europe’s 1970s oil shocks
  • Rising oil and gas prices drive shift to clean energy
  • Electric vehicle and solar adoption surge across Asia
  • Governments use subsidies and reserves to manage rising costs
  • Airlines and public services cut operations due to fuel shortages

Historical Context and Current Shifts

During the 1970s, Europe faced a sevenfold increase in crude oil prices. Analysts then predicted stable demand, but the reality was different. Europe responded by investing in nuclear power, North Sea gas, and pipelines from Siberia. By the mid-1980s, Europe’s gas consumption more than doubled from 1973 levels, while oil use fell by 20 percent. Crude imports dropped 30 percent, far below earlier forecasts.

Asia now faces similar challenges. Over 80 percent of oil and gas in the region is imported. Japan and South Korea remain highly dependent on imports. Vietnam became a net energy importer in the last decade. Malaysia, once petroleum-rich, now imports more fuel than it exports. Indonesia has relied on imports for over 20 years. Gas fields in Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Thailand are depleting, increasing reliance on costly imports.

Economic and Social Impacts

Rising fossil fuel prices are affecting consumers. In Seoul, the price of kalguksu noodle soup exceeded 10,000 won ($6.79) in March. Inflation reached 2.2 percent, partly due to energy costs. In Japan, food prices rose 6.8 percent last year, with ramen nearing 1,000 yen ($6.27). Public bathhouses face tighter margins as heating oil costs rise.

Governments are using subsidies and reserves to cushion impacts. Japan released 80 million barrels of oil and saw energy prices fall 5.7 percent in March. However, consumer confidence is declining. Airlines in Southeast Asia cut May schedules by 10 to 15 percent as jet fuel prices in Singapore doubled. Thai Airways canceled two-thirds of daily flights between Bangkok and Seoul. Cathay Pacific added a $200 surcharge on long-distance flights, raising return ticket prices by $800 between Australia and Europe.

Several countries introduced four-day workweeks to cut fuel use. Jeepney drivers in Manila staged strikes over fuel taxes, with some reporting an 80 percent drop in income. In Pakistan, power cuts exceed two hours daily as LNG supplies from Qatar decline, causing hardship during extreme heat.

Rise of Clean Energy Alternatives

Clean energy adoption is accelerating. In India, LPG shortages led to increased demand for electric induction stoves. LPG consumption in March fell 13 percent year-on-year. In Australia, used electric vehicle sales doubled in March. At the Bangkok International Motor Show, Chinese EV brands made up about two-thirds of bookings. Vietnamese EV-maker Vinfast plans to sell five times more cars overseas this year than in 2025.

Battery-only vehicles now account for about 50 percent of new car sales in Singapore and Thailand and about a third in China, Indonesia, South Korea, and Vietnam. Imports of solar panels from China in March increased solar capacity by half in the Philippines and by a quarter or more in Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Pakistan. A Manila solar installer reported signing up to 10 times more contracts per month than before the crisis.

Future Outlook

Asia is central to global fossil fuel demand forecasts. BP Plc projects all LNG demand growth will come from emerging Asian countries. The International Energy Agency expects Southeast Asia and India to account for 70 percent of global oil demand growth by 2035. However, the current crisis is accelerating the shift to clean energy. The United Arab Emirates’ exit from OPEC may further destabilize prices, encouraging more countries to seek alternatives. China’s exports of solar panels, electric vehicles, and batteries surged in March, signaling a rapid transition.

CarBike 360 Says

Asia stands at a critical crossroads where rising oil prices are forcing faster adoption of clean energy solutions. While the transition brings long-term sustainability, short-term challenges around infrastructure, affordability, and energy security remain. How governments and industries respond now will shape the region’s energy stability, economic growth, and environmental future in the years ahead.
