CFMoto has paused its plans to launch in India, following a year of anticipation and delays. The company had generated interest after the 450MT adventure bike was tested on Indian roads in 2024. The initial announcement in early 2025 indicated CFMoto's intention to return to the Indian market. However, the expected mid-2025 launch did not occur, and official confirmation now states that the plans are on hold.

Key Highlights

  • CFMoto has paused its India launch plans due to regulatory and market challenges
  • Delays are linked to E20 fuel compliance and higher GST rates for bikes above 350cc
  • The 450MT adventure bike was tested in India and planned as a CKD import
  • CFMoto is evaluating the Indian market before making further decisions

Delays and Official Statement

The delays were first linked to E20 fuel compliance issues. E20 compliance refers to the requirement for vehicles to run on petrol blended with up to 20 percent ethanol. In addition, the Indian government increased GST rates for motorcycles above 350cc, affecting the business case for premium bikes. A local distributor, who remains unnamed, provided a statement explaining the situation. According to the statement, all planning and operational activities for CFMoto in India are currently on hold. The global team is using this time to study the Indian market and adjust to the new GST rates and E20 compliance requirements.

CFMoto also intends to send a team to India for further market evaluation before proceeding. The company has not provided a timeline for when or if the launch will resume. CFMoto Global has been contacted for additional comments, and updates will follow as information becomes available.

Background on CFMoto 450MT

The CFMoto 450MT is an adventure motorcycle featuring a 449cc twin-cylinder engine. It produces 44hp and 44Nm of torque and has a weight of 195 kilograms. The bike has earned a positive reputation internationally for its capability, value, and reliability. The 450MT was planned for India as a Completely Knocked Down (CKD) import, which would involve local assembly from imported parts.

In overseas markets, the 450MT is priced competitively. Its price matches or undercuts Indian-made single-cylinder models such as the Royal Enfield Himalayan 450 and KTM 390 Adventure. CFMoto, a Chinese manufacturer, requires a local partner to facilitate its entry into the Indian market. The company had previously conducted international press tests for its new 675 three-cylinder models in Portugal, further showcasing its global ambitions.

Future Prospects

CFMoto's entry into India remains uncertain due to regulatory and market challenges. The company is reassessing its strategy in light of new government policies and compliance requirements. The Indian premium motorcycle segment faces a challenging year as manufacturers adapt to evolving regulations and market conditions.
