Commuters in Delhi faced an unprecedented challenge on Monday morning as heavy traffic brought parts of the city to a standstill, particularly in outer, north-west, and central Delhi. The crippling congestion was attributed to diversions and heightened security measures ahead of the anticipated 'Dilli Chalo' march organized by farmer unions.
Farmers Protest 2.0: Why They March Again

As the city grapples with the traffic chaos, the renewal of the farmers' protest, labeled Farmers Protest 2.0, is a key factor contributing to the disruption. Originating from Punjab, Haryana, and Western Uttar Pradesh, the farmers are demanding a comprehensive set of measures from the Central government to ensure the financial viability of farming. Unlike the previous protests, this iteration, spearheaded by a breakaway faction of the Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), focuses on broader concerns, including a legal guarantee of minimum support price (MSP) for all crops and the implementation of the MS Swaminathan committee's recommendations on agriculture.
Massive Police Deployment and Diversions
In anticipation of the farmers' protest, the Delhi Police have implemented strategic diversions and significantly increased deployment around critical establishments and borders. Over 1,500 traffic police personnel have been stationed at the three main borders to manage traffic flow and prevent snarls. Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Chinmoy Biswal reassured the public of elaborate arrangements within the city to mitigate disruptions.
Advisory Released by Delhi Traffic Police
Responding to a surge in queries on social media platforms, Delhi Traffic Police released a comprehensive advisory, urging motorists to avoid border areas during the proposed protest. The advisory outlined alternative routes for those traveling towards Sonipat, Panipat, Karnal, Bahadurgarh, and Rohtak, providing a detailed roadmap to ease the commute.
Seeking Alternate Routes
Motorists heading towards Sonipat, Panipat, and Karnal via NH44 were advised to take Exit 1 (Alipur cut) or Exit 2 (DSIIDC cut), offering alternative paths to reach their destinations. Similar guidance was provided for those heading towards Bahadurgarh and Rohtak, emphasizing the use of specific exits and alternative roads to bypass potential congestion points.
Verdict
As the farmers' protest gains momentum, commuters are bracing themselves for further disruptions. The situation on Monday served as a start to what could be a challenging period for daily commuters in the national capital. The multifaceted demands of the protesting farmers add complexity to the situation, and the government faces the intricate task of addressing these concerns while managing the logistical challenges posed by the ongoing protests.
