NHAI's Deadline: Deactivation of FASTags with Incomplete KYC After January 31, 2024

The Nation Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has issued a crucial announcement, revealing its decision to deactivate FASTags with valid balances but lacking complete Know Your Customer (KYC) details. Banks are set to carry out these deactivations post the 31st of January 2024.

Urgent KYC Upgrade Appeal

NHAI is urging FASTag users to promptly complete the KYC process for their latest FASTags. This upgrade aligns with the Reserve Bank of India's rules and is essential to maintaining uninterrupted service.

'One Vehicle, One FASTag' Policy

According to NHAI, consumers must ensure the completion of KYC for their most recent FASTags to avoid any disruptions. The 'One Vehicle, One FASTag' policy is emphasized, encouraging users to return previously issued FASTags associated with the same vehicle to their respective banks.

Enhancing Toll Collection Efficiency

Initially introduced for efficient toll collection and reducing waiting times at toll plazas, FASTags have become integral to transparent transactions. NHAI's 'One Vehicle, One FASTag' campaign seeks to streamline electronic toll collection, discouraging the use of a single FASTag for multiple vehicles or the coupling of multiple FASTags to a single vehicle. NHAI emphasizes that only the latest FASTag account will remain active, with previous tags scheduled for deactivation or blacklisting after January 31, 2024.

NHAI's Response to Misuse

NHAI has taken this initiative in response to recent reports highlighting the issuance of several FASTags for a single vehicle and instances of FASTags being issued without proper KYC, contravening RBI regulations.

With a 98 percent penetration rate and over 8 crore users, NHAI believes that the 'One Vehicle, One FASTag' project will significantly enhance toll operations, ensuring smoother and more efficient transactions on national highways.
