Ferrari has formally unveiled the F80, their latest hypercar, which will retail for over $4.0 million in the United States and includes an incredible 1,200 horsepower hybrid V-6 engine. More than ten years after the legendary LaFerrari first appeared on the road, Ferrari hopes to set the standard for hypercar performance with this debut.
The Ferrari F80 is priced at approximately €3.6 million (about $4 million USD), making it the most expensive Ferrari ever. Production will be limited to just 799 units, with manufacturing set to commence at the end of 2025 and concluding in 2027.
The groundbreaking hybrid V-6 powertrain forms the foundation of the Ferrari F80. This new engine is essentially the classic Ferrari V-12 engine, but with the addition of three electric motors. The 3.0-liter V-6 alone generates 900 horsepower, while the combined output with the electric motors reaches a jaw-dropping 1,200 horsepower, making it the most powerful Ferrari ever made.
You can go from 0 to 100kmph of speed in just 2.15 seconds and a 0 to 201 kmph time of 5.75 seconds, the F80 is designed for speed. With a peak speed of 350 kmph, it marginally surpasses the McLaren W1.
The architecture of the V-6 engine is similar to that of the 499P Le Mans race vehicle and the 296 sports car's 120-degree hot-V engine. By optimising the ignition and injection timing, Ferrari's engineers have raised the combustion chamber pressure by 20% in comparison to the 296 model. To manage the extra pressure, an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission also optimises performance, enabling the engine to run at 9,000 rpm.
Ferrari has developed its electric motors in-house, placing two motors at the front axle alongside an integrated cooling system and inverter, while a third motor resides at the rear. These front motors facilitate torque vectoring and can recover up to 210 kilowatts of energy via regenerative braking. The rear motor not only starts the gasoline engine but also boosts torque and recoups energy.
The F80 is powered by an 800-volt lithium-cell battery pack with a total capacity of 2.3 kilowatt-hours, providing an additional output of 325 horsepower.
The F80 features an asymmetrical monocoque chassis made of carbon fiber and composite materials, with a fully carbon fiber roof and aluminum front and rear subframes. This unique design allows for adjustable seating and enhances accessibility with butterfly doors.
Ferrari has designed the cockpit to prioritize the driver, featuring a "1+" configuration with an angled control panel and a bright red adjustable sport bucket seat for the driver, contrasting with the fixed passenger seat. The new steering wheel design is set to influence future Ferrari models.
Drawing inspiration from Formula 1, the F80 incorporates advanced aerodynamic features, including a pointed nose and Ferrari's signature S-Duct, generating an impressive 1,014 pounds of downforce at 155 mph. With an active wing and a substantial diffuser, the total downforce reaches 2,204 pounds.
Versatile Driving Modes
The F80 is equipped with three driving modes: Hybrid, Performance, and Qualify. Although it does not feature a fully electric drive mode, the Hybrid setting focuses on energy recovery and battery charging, while the Performance mode enhances power output. The Qualify mode unleashes the full potential of the F80.
Boost Optimization Technology
A new feature called Boost Optimization allows drivers to access additional power based on track conditions, optimizing performance during specific sections of the course.
Ferrari has partnered with Brembo to introduce new CCM-R Plus braking technology, significantly enhancing braking performance. The active suspension system, based on spool-valve dampers, ensures excellent ride quality and handling, crucial for a high-performance vehicle.
