Hyundai Motor India has made a bold leadership move by appointing Madhurendra Malu as Vertical Head for its upcoming luxury brand Genesis, effective today, February 16, 2026. This decision was taken by the managing board of directors after showcasing the company's strongest-ever monthly performance, with domestic sales hitting 59,107 units in January 2026, a solid 9.5% jump from last year.
The timing couldn't be better for Hyundai, which also clocked total sales of 73,137 units last month, up 11.5% year-on-year, fueled by stars like the Hyundai Venue and the Hyundai Aura. As the luxury segment heats up, Malu's appointment signals Hyundai's serious intent to challenge rivals with Genesis's sophisticated lineup of sedans, SUVs, and EVs.
Madhurendra Malu brings over two decades of automotive experience to the table, making him a perfect fit genius mind for Genesis. Most recently at JSW MG Motor India, he spearheaded the launch of the MG Select luxury retail channel, proving his knack for premium positioning. Before that, he drove Skoda Auto India's dealer network expansion and held key sales and strategy roles at Maruti Suzuki for over 16 years.
An MDI Gurgaon alumnus with an engineering background, Malu excels in data-driven strategies and network growth. His move to Hyundai follows the exclusion of Anuraag Singh from senior management due to reporting tweaks.
Hyundai's January numbers are nothing short of stellar. Domestic sales soared to 59,107 units, the highest ever, while exports jumped 21% to 14,030 units. Standouts included the Venue, with a peak of 12,413 units, and the Aura, at 7,978, both all-time monthly highs.
Tarun Garg, MD & CEO, called it a "defining chapter," crediting customers, partners, and teams. This surge underscores Hyundai's grip on the mass market, setting the stage for upscale ventures like Genesis.

Genesis, Hyundai's global luxury division, has been on Indian radars since CEO Tarun Garg teased it in last year's annual report. The brand promises high-end sedans, SUVs like the GV80, and EVs, with local assembly planned to dodge hefty import duties. A 2027 debut aligns with
Hyundai's goal is 26 new models by FY2030, blending sustainability and sophistication.
Malu will craft Genesis's premium image, from launches to retail networks. In a market buzzing with Mercedes, BMW, and Audi, his luxury channel experience could give Hyundai an edge; think tailored experiences for India's affluent buyers craving tech-laden rides.
This appointment isn't isolated; it's part of Hyundai's senior management refresh to fuel growth. With sales firing on all cylinders and Genesis gearing up, the company eyes deeper premium penetration. Hyundai's blending volume prowess with luxury flair positions it strongly against rivals.
As Hyundai accelerates into the luxury lane with Malu at Genesis's helm, expect a seismic shift in India's premium auto scene. Will Genesis redefine opulence with locally built marvels, outpacing German giants? Hyundai is planning the road, promising thrilling detours, bold innovations, and a fiercer rivalry that's set to electrify every drive.
