Renault India has entered a strategic partnership with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur to enhance its vehicle research and development through advanced aerodynamic and wind-noise testing. The collaboration will use IIT Kanpur's National Wind Tunnel Facility (NWTF) to support the development of future passenger vehicles.
Key Highlights
- Renault India partners with IIT Kanpur for aerodynamic and wind-noise vehicle testing.
- The National Wind Tunnel Facility supports testing at speeds up to 280 km/h with upgrades for over 400 km/h.
- Collaboration aims to validate vehicles against engineering targets for future product development.
- Partnership formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding covering commercial and intellectual property terms.
Details of the Partnership
Renault India will utilise the NWTF at IIT Kanpur to evaluate the aerodynamic characteristics and wind-noise performance of its vehicles. The facility features a continuous closed-jet test section measuring 3.0 metres by 2.25 metres. It supports aerodynamic testing at speeds from 80 km/h to 280 km/h. IIT Kanpur is upgrading the facility to allow testing at speeds above 400 km/h.
The partnership aims to validate Renault India's vehicles against predefined engineering targets. This process will help ensure the company's future products meet high standards for aerodynamics and noise reduction. The collaboration is formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that covers commercial engagement, intellectual property management, and confidentiality.
Significance for Vehicle Development

Dr Vikraman V, Chief of Engineering at Renault Group India, stated that this partnership strengthens Renault's engineering capabilities in the country. By combining IIT Kanpur's research infrastructure with Renault's global engineering expertise, the company aims to develop vehicles that are ready for future challenges.
The NWTF's advanced testing capabilities will enable Renault India to refine vehicle designs for better performance and comfort. Aerodynamic and wind-noise testing are critical for improving fuel efficiency, reducing emissions, and enhancing the driving experience.
Context of Broader Industry Changes
The automotive industry in India is undergoing significant changes, including shifts in fuel policy and vehicle standards. The Ministry of Petroleum has noted a transition from pilot projects and E5 fuel supplies to E20 through phased policy adjustments. The government has highlighted that maintaining parallel supply chains for pure petrol, E10, and E20 would increase costs and affect investments in ethanol production.
The Ministry also stated that the E20 programme aims to reduce India's dependence on crude oil imports and protect the country from global oil price volatility. These changes emphasise the importance of advanced research and development in the automotive sector, as manufacturers adapt to new regulations and market demands.
Renault India's collaboration with IIT Kanpur reflects a broader industry trend towards innovation and technical advancement. By investing in state-of-the-art testing and research, automakers are better positioned to meet evolving standards and consumer expectations.
