IIIT Hyderabad has developed an AI-based system called VIOLA to help police detect traffic violations using dashcams. The system, created by the Applied AI Research Centre (INAI) at the International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad (IIIT-H), uses dashcams mounted on police patrol vehicles to monitor and identify traffic offences. The system assists in generating e-challans for violators.

AI System for Traffic Enforcement
VIOLA analyses video footage from dashcams to detect violations such as riding without a helmet, triple riding, and driving on the wrong side. The system uses automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) to identify vehicles involved in these offences. Once a violation is detected, the system forwards the information to the Telangana Police's e-challan system for further action.
The project builds on previous research by Prof. Ravi Kiran S. from IIIT-H's Centre for Visual Information Technology (CVIT), which focused on helmet detection. INAI expanded this research to create a deployable traffic enforcement tool. Unlike traditional fixed CCTV cameras, VIOLA uses four dashcams installed in police patrol vehicles. This approach increases enforcement coverage without the need for additional roadside infrastructure.
Verification and System Performance
Police personnel continue to verify each violation flagged by the AI system before issuing a challan. The AI serves as a decision-support tool, ensuring human oversight remains part of the process. According to IIIT-H, the system has helped generate several traffic challans during its pilot phase. The institute reported that around 96% of violations flagged by the AI were approved by police after verification.
The developers are working to add new features, including speed detection and the ability to identify road infrastructure issues. These issues include potholes, damaged roads, and missing lane markings, all detected using the same dashcam footage. The project was developed with support from iHub-Data, IIIT-H's technology innovation hub.
Future Deployment and Expansion
The team is in discussions with police departments outside Telangana to explore wider deployment of the VIOLA system. The goal is to expand the use of AI-driven traffic enforcement tools to other regions. The system aims to improve traffic rule enforcement and road safety by providing reliable, scalable support to police personnel.
