Kia Sorento Hybrid Begins Road Testing in India Ahead of Expected 2026 Launch

Kia has started road testing the Sorento Hybrid in India, marking a major step toward its local launch. The Sorento was seen on public roads for the first time, confirming that development is advancing quickly. This follows earlier sightings of a static unit indoors. The heavily camouflaged test vehicle displayed proportions and a stance that identify it as the Sorento. This suggests Kia is preparing the premium three-row SUV for the Indian market, with a launch likely by the end of 2026.

Key Highlights

  • Kia Sorento Hybrid begins road testing on Indian roads
  • Launch expected by end of 2026 with local manufacturing planned
  • Hybrid powertrain likely to be the main focus for India
  • Sorento will compete with premium three-row SUVs like Toyota Innova Hycross

Design and Segment Positioning

The Sorento test mule retains its upright silhouette, boxy proportions, and long wheelbase, all contributing to a strong road presence. Large alloy wheels and thick body cladding are visible from the side, while the rear section appears wide and upright. Although the tail lamps remain covered, their shape hints at updated LED internals, similar to the global facelift model.

Compared to previous indoor sightings, the road test confirms Kia is adapting the SUV for Indian conditions. When launched, the Sorento will sit above the Seltos and Carens in Kia’s India lineup. Globally, the Sorento is known as a premium family SUV, offering three-row seating, comfort, space, and advanced technology. With a length of about 4.8 metres, it will compete with models like the Toyota Innova Hycross, but with a more pronounced SUV stance.

Powertrain and Production Plans

One of the main highlights for India is expected to be the Sorento’s hybrid powertrain. Spy images, including a rotary gear selector, suggest the test unit is a hybrid variant. Globally, the Sorento is available with petrol, turbo petrol, and hybrid engines. For India, Kia is likely to focus on strong hybrid options, reflecting the rising demand for fuel-efficient premium SUVs. A petrol-only version may also be offered, but a diesel variant appears unlikely at this stage.

Unlike the Carnival, which is assembled from completely knocked down (CKD) kits, the Sorento is expected to be manufactured locally at Kia’s Anantapur facility. Local production could help keep prices in the Rs 30–40 lakh range. Manufacturing in India also opens opportunities for exports, making the Sorento a significant global product from the country.

Outlook for Launch

With road testing underway, the Kia Sorento’s India launch is expected within the next year. This move shows Kia’s intent to strengthen its position in the premium SUV segment. The Sorento aims to combine size, hybrid technology, and a strong road presence. More details on design, features, and powertrain options are expected as testing continues in the coming months.
