One of the most notable features on the test mule is a front-mounted radar unit. This addition suggests the 990 SMT could offer advanced rider aids, including adaptive cruise control and collision warning. These technologies aim to enhance rider safety and convenience during long rides.

The motorcycle uses 17-inch alloy wheels at both the front and rear, fitted with road-focused tyres. KTM has equipped the bike with in-house developed WP brake calipers, designed to improve braking performance. Suspension duties are managed by WP USD forks at the front and a rear monoshock, both known for their reliability and adjustability.

Engine and Expected Launch

The KTM 990 SMT will use the company's 947cc parallel-twin LC8c engine, which also powers the 990 Duke. This engine is expected to produce about 120bhp and 103Nm of torque. KTM is likely to tune the engine to match the SMT’s sporty touring nature, balancing performance with comfort for long-distance riding.

KTM is expected to launch the 990 SMT globally later this year. However, current reports suggest that the model is unlikely to be introduced in the Indian market. The addition of advanced features and a powerful engine positions the 990 SMT as a significant update in KTM’s big-bike range.

CarBike 360 Says

With the 990 SMT, KTM appears to be blending supermoto agility with long-distance touring comfort, backed by a potent 947cc twin and a modern electronics package. If the European test mules are any indication, the production-ready bike could arrive as early as 2025, giving performance-focused riders a compelling new option in the sport-touring space.
