Key Highlights

  • Mercedes-Benz reveals official images of upcoming G-Class Cabriolet
  • Powered foldable roof distinguishes cabriolet from standard G-Class
  • Expected to feature AMG G 63 engine with 585hp and 850Nm torque
  • No launch date announced and India availability remains uncertain

Key Features of G-Class Cabriolet

The G-Class Cabriolet continues a tradition of open-top variants in the G-Class lineup. The first cabriolet was introduced in 1979 as a two-door short-wheelbase model and remained in production until 2013. In 2017, Mercedes-Benz launched the G-Class Maybach 650 Landaulet, a four-door SUV with a 630hp 6.0-litre V12 engine.

The new G-Class Cabriolet stands out from the standard model with its powered, foldable roof. The upper rear-most section has been removed to accommodate this feature. When the roof is folded, it occupies the exposed boot area. The vehicle retains the boxy silhouette of the standard G-Class, including circular LED headlamps, flared wheel arches, side steps, and dual side exhausts. The alloy wheels are expected to be 22 inches in size. Despite the changes for the convertible roof, the tailgate-mounted spare wheel remains present.

Design and Interior Expectations

Mercedes-Benz has not revealed the interior of the G-Class Cabriolet. However, it is expected to feature a cabin layout similar to the standard G-Class, which is known for its high level of configurability. The regular G-Class includes a dual-screen setup for the digital driver's display and infotainment system, a dashboard-mounted grab handle, and turbine-style air conditioning vents. The cabriolet version is likely to add extra controls for the foldable roof.

Engine and Performance Details

While Mercedes-Benz has not confirmed the powertrain for the G-Class Cabriolet, ‘AMG’ branded license plates suggest it may be offered in a ‘G 63’ version. The standard G 63 AMG features a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine with 48V mild hybrid assist. This engine produces 585hp and 850Nm of torque. The G 63 AMG can accelerate from 0 to 100kph in 4.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 220kph.

Market Availability and Pricing

The company has not stated whether the G-Class Cabriolet will be launched in India. If introduced, it is expected to cost more than the standard G-Class SUVs currently available in the Indian market. The new cabriolet continues the legacy of open-top G-Class models, offering a unique option for luxury SUV buyers.
