Mercedes-Benz has officially confirmed the upcoming launch of its first Maybach-branded MPV, the Mercedes Maybach VLS. This new flagship model will compete directly with the Lexus LM in the ultra luxury MPV segment. The announcement came from Mercedes-Benz Group CEO Ola Kallenius during the unveiling of the updated Maybach S-Class in Beijing, China.
Key Highlights
- Mercedes-Benz confirms Maybach VLS as its first ultra luxury MPV
- Maybach VLS will compete with Lexus LM in the luxury MPV segment
- Based on VAN.EA platform with electric powertrains and advanced features
- Production of standard VLS expected by end of 2026 Maybach version likely in 2027
Maybach VLS: New Ultra Luxury MPV
The Mercedes Maybach VLS will be based on the standard VLS, which shares the VAN.EA platform with the recently introduced VLE electric MPV. Both the VLE and VLS are part of Mercedes-Benz's new van line-up and will feature electric powertrains. The Maybach VLS will be the brand’s first MPV to carry the Maybach badge and is positioned as a Grand Limousine.
Design inspiration for the VLS and Maybach VLS comes from the Vision V Concept. The standard VLS is expected to debut soon and enter production by the end of 2026. The Maybach version is likely to follow in 2027. This move responds to increasing demand for ultra luxury MPVs, especially in Asian markets, where buyers seek vehicles offering generous space and flexible seating layouts.
Features and Expected Specifications

The Maybach VLS aims to deliver a high level of comfort and luxury. Expected features include lounge seats with massage, heating, and ventilation functions, multiple seating configurations, a privacy rear compartment, powered sun shades, a drop-down widescreen high-resolution entertainment screen, a refrigerator, and champagne flutes. The interior will use premium materials and showcase detailed craftsmanship.
While specific powertrain details for the VLS and Maybach VLS have not been disclosed, both models will use the VAN.EA platform. The VLE, which shares this platform, offers 80 kWh and 115 kWh battery options. The VLS may feature larger battery capacities. Air suspension will be included to enhance ride comfort.
Market Context and Positioning
Ultra luxury vehicles have traditionally been sedans, but the segment has expanded to include SUVs and now MPVs. The Lexus LM set a benchmark in the luxury MPV market, and Mercedes-Benz is now entering this space with the Maybach VLS. The new model is designed to meet the expectations of buyers who prioritize spaciousness and advanced luxury features.
In India, Mercedes-Benz recently launched the 2026 V-Class AMG Line with petrol (V300) and diesel (V00d) engines, alongside the VLE electric MPV. The upcoming Maybach VLS will offer an even higher level of luxury, targeting customers seeking the most exclusive MPV experience.
