Key Highlights

  • Morgan will build nine Midsummer Coupé units for private clients.
  • Developed with Pininfarina and based on a client request.
  • Features new roofline, bonded glass, and 19-inch forged wheels.
  • Uses a BMW B58 engine and CXV-generation aluminum platform.
  • Each car is individually specified with client involvement.

Project Origins and Development

The Midsummer Coupé began with a single client request following the launch of the open-top Midsummer in 2024. A customer proposed a coupe version, which led to the development of this new model. Interest from other clients prompted Morgan to commit to nine individually specified commissions. The prototype, called the "artists' proof," will serve as the design and engineering reference for the client cars.

The exterior was developed in collaboration with Pininfarina, continuing their partnership from the original Midsummer project. The design brief required more than just an enclosed roof. Morgan and Pininfarina introduced a new roofline, revised proportions, and a more resolved silhouette while retaining the barchetta's character. Key visual elements from the original Midsummer include polished stainless steel lower body panels and a centerline stainless graphic from the bonnet to the rear.

Design Features and Engineering

The Midsummer Coupe introduces several new features. These include a machined-aluminum beltline that integrates the door handle, a drop-glass side-window system replacing Morgan's usual detachable side screens, and 19-inch forged aluminum wheels. Morgan describes these wheels as its most detailed design to date.

The prototype's interior uses extensive teak and materials sourced from marine applications. Future commissions may use alternative wood finishes. The car carries the Pininfarina Fuoriserie badge, reserved for vehicles built outside Pininfarina's standard design program.

The car is built on Morgan's CXV-generation bonded-aluminium platform and uses the BMW B58 "O1" engine, also found in the Supersport 400. The fixed-roof structure required new engineering solutions, including billet-machined aluminum A-pillars, bonded structural glazing, and a stressed-skin aluminum body. These features contribute to the car's rigidity.

Morgan states that bonding the windscreen directly to the body, instead of using a rubber seal, reduces peak structural stresses by about 50%. The roof glass is also bonded into the structure. Despite these changes, the car weighs only 2.5% more than a Supersport with a hardtop.

Production Methods and Client Involvement

Each car is built using a mix of traditional coachbuilding and digital production methods. The centre body is hand-formed from a flat aluminum sheet using English wheels. Panels are shaped to close tolerances to minimize filler use. Assembly uses filler-free TIG welding and countersunk solid aluminum rivets. Each body is assembled on a laser-scanned surface table accurate to 0.3 mm with digital measurement and manual finishing.

The car's wood frame, including laminated wheel arches and machined ash components, is load-bearing. It helps transfer structural loads and contributes to noise damping. Each of the nine cars will be developed individually, with owners working directly with Morgan's design team on colors, materials, and trim.

Morgan will begin building the first client commission soon. Details of individual cars will be released over time. The prototype will be displayed at the Louwman Collection in The Hague before client deliveries begin.
