Next-Generation Kia Sonet spotted testing in India ahead of 2027 launch
Kia is gearing up to introduce the next generation Sonet, recently spotted testing on Indian roads with significant design and feature upgrades expected.

The next-generation Kia Sonet, expected to launch in India in 2027, has been seen testing on Indian roads. The heavily camouflaged test vehicle reveals several design changes and hints at new features for the compact SUV. Kia has codenamed this model QY2E, and it marks the second generation of the Sonet in the Indian market.
Key Highlights
- Next-generation Kia Sonet expected to launch in India in 2027
- New model features updated design, larger alloy wheels and enhanced platform
- Current petrol and diesel engine options likely to continue, with hybrid expected later
- Interior may include dual 12.3-inch displays similar to Kia Syros
- Prices expected to rise from current Rs 7.34 lakh to Rs 14.09 lakh range
Exterior and Design Updates

Despite the camouflage, some exterior updates are visible. The front fascia features a new split-style LED headlamp housing. Boomerang-shaped LED daytime running lights, similar to those on the Kia Sorento, sit above the headlamps. The grille appears smaller than the current Sonet but retains the honeycomb pattern. The front bumper is expected to have a more aggressive design.
In profile, the test vehicle sports alloy wheels first seen on the first-generation Kia Seltos (2019-2022). These 17-inch alloys are larger than those on the current Sonet. Additional visible features include pull-type door handles, disc brakes on all wheels, and flush-style roof rails. The wheel arches and lower door sections show prominent cladding, suggesting a more rugged appearance.
Interior and Platform Changes
Inside, a curved dashboard screen is visible, possibly similar to the dual 12.3-inch displays found in the Kia Syros. No other interior details are confirmed at this stage. At the rear, the taillights appear slimmer and seem to echo the front LED DRL design. The rear bumper looks new, but camouflage conceals whether a light bar connects the taillights.
The next-generation Kia Sonet will shift from the current K2 platform to Kia's enhanced K1 platform, which also underpins the Syros. This new platform is likely to address the Sonet’s limited rear space by allowing a longer wheelbase and a more spacious cabin. Kia is targeting a 5-star Bharat NCAP safety rating for the new Sonet, following the Syros, which has already achieved this rating.
Features, Powertrains, and Pricing

The dashboard is expected to be completely redesigned. Apart from larger screens, the feature list is likely to remain similar to the current Sonet. It is unclear if advanced level-2 ADAS will be available, as Kia removed this feature from the Syros in its 2026 update.
The new Sonet is expected to retain its current engine options. These include an 83 HP 1.2-liter naturally aspirated petrol, a 120 HP 1.2-liter turbo-petrol, and a 116 HP 1.5-liter diesel engine. Both manual and automatic transmissions are expected to continue.
Kia is also developing a strong-hybrid engine for the Sonet, likely to arrive in 2028 or 2029 after the new model's launch. Technical details for this hybrid powertrain are not yet available. Kia is expected to increase the Sonet’s price with the new generation. The current model is priced between Rs 7.34 lakh and Rs 14.09 lakh (ex-showroom).

CarBike 360 Says
The next-generation Kia Sonet appears set to raise the bar in the compact SUV segment with its refreshed styling, upgraded features, and expected powertrain improvements. As testing progresses in India, anticipation continues to build around its 2027 debut, where it will aim to strengthen Kia’s foothold in one of the country’s most competitive automotive segments.
