Key Highlights

  • NHAI introduces a nationwide framework for independent proof checking of major bridge designs.
  • Around 12 IITs and other technical institutions to review structural and hydraulic studies.
  • The framework applies to all new National Highway projects regardless of construction format.

Independent Review for Bridge Designs

The new framework requires independent technical reviews of hydraulic studies and structural designs for large bridge structures. These reviews will focus on structures designed for a service life of 100 years or more. The evaluation will cover structural design calculations, engineering drawings, construction methodologies, geotechnical investigations, and hydraulic studies.

Currently, about 12 IITs, including those in Delhi, Bombay, Roorkee, and Kharagpur, have agreed to participate in the initiative. Other premier technical institutions will also collaborate with NHAI to ensure thorough vetting of major bridge projects.

Uniform Application Across Projects

NHAI stated that the vetting framework will apply uniformly to all new projects, regardless of the construction mode or project delivery format. This standardization aims to improve quality assurance across the national road network.

The framework seeks to minimize long-term operational risks, enhance structural safety, and increase the reliability of bridge designs. By involving top technical institutions, NHAI intends to set a higher standard for infrastructure quality and safety in India.

Industry Collaboration and Future Impact

The collaboration with IITs and other institutions marks a significant step in ensuring that all major bridge designs undergo rigorous independent checks. This approach is expected to support the expanding national highway network by improving the durability and safety of critical infrastructure.

As the framework is implemented, NHAI aims to strengthen public trust in the quality and safety of new road projects. The initiative reflects a broader commitment to sustainable and reliable infrastructure development across India.
