Renault Restructures India Operations to Boost Exports and Market Share
Renault is restructuring its India operations by separating its powertrain business and integrating manufacturing and sales. The company targets up to 2 billion euros in exports and aims to regain a 3–5% market share by 2030.

Renault has initiated a major restructuring of its India operations, seeking approval from the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) to separate its powertrain business into a dedicated entity and integrate vehicle manufacturing and sales under a single unit. The company aims to create clearer operating structures that reflect the unique needs of each business segment and strengthen India’s role as a manufacturing and export hub.
Key Highlights
- Renault seeks NCLT approval to restructure India operations and separate powertrain business
- Company targets up to 2 billion euros in annual exports from India by 2030
- Renault sales in India fell from 135000 units in 2016-17 to under 38000 in 2024-25
- RNAIPL plant in Oragadam produces Kwid Triber Magnite and Kiger models
- Renault aims to regain 3–5 percent market share in India by 2030
Restructuring Details and Strategic Goals
The restructuring is part of Renault’s broader strategy to expand its presence in India and increase exports. The company targets annual exports of up to 2 billion euros from India by 2030. Renault stated that the proposed changes will not disrupt ongoing operations or impact stakeholders, including employees, customers, dealers, suppliers, or partners. Employment terms, service continuity, and existing relationships will remain unchanged.
Renault’s renewed focus on India includes complete control of the Renault Nissan Automotive India Pvt Ltd (RNAIPL) plant and an investment of Rs 5,400 crore. The company has also committed €600 million to support its global vision and growth in the region. With limited global expansion options, India has become a key market for Renault’s growth strategy.
Manufacturing and Market Performance

Renault recently acquired full control of RNAIPL from its alliance partner Nissan. The RNAIPL plant in Oragadam near Chennai serves as the central manufacturing base for both Renault and Nissan in India, producing models such as the Kwid, Triber, Magnite, and Kiger.
To revive its market position after years of declining sales, Renault is accelerating product launches across multiple powertrains. This marks a shift from its previous slow rollout strategy, which allowed competitors to gain ground through frequent model introductions. The upcoming Duster facelift, including a hybrid variant, signals the start of this renewed product push.
Renault’s sales in India have dropped from over 135,000 units and about 4% market share in 2016-17 to under 38,000 units and below 1% market share in 2024-25. The company now aims to rebuild volumes and achieve a 3–5% market share by 2030.
Industry Context and Additional Developments
Other industry players are also adapting to changing market conditions. For example, Kylaq, Kushaq, and Slavia models are now accessible through CSC’s digital-first network in non-metropolitan areas. In the tyre sector, companies plan to spend cautiously in the first quarter due to uncertainty but will continue growth and maintenance capital expenditures to support demand. Despite input cost inflation, structural demand drivers remain strong in the tyre industry.
