Rocklink India Pvt. Ltd., a subsidiary of Germany's Rocklink Group, has launched an integrated recycling facility in Sikandrabad, Uttar Pradesh. The plant aims to recover lithium, rare earth elements, and industrial metals from lithium-ion batteries, rare earth magnets, and industrial waste. This move positions India in the global circular economy for battery materials.
Key Highlights
- Rocklink India opens integrated recycling facility in Sikandrabad Uttar Pradesh
- The facility can recycle 10000 tonnes of lithium-ion batteries annually and 60 tonnes of rare earth magnets monthly
- Rare earth chloride processing line with 1500 tonne yearly capacity to be completed by Q1 2026
- Proprietary R2 technology achieves over 98 percent efficiency in recovering metals from battery materials
- Plans include battery refurbishment and collaboration with startups and research institutions
Facility Capabilities and Operations
The Sikandrabad facility starts with an annual lithium-ion battery recycling capacity of 10,000 tonnes. It also processes 60 tonnes of rare earth magnets per month. A rare earth chloride processing line, with a capacity of 1,500 tonnes per year, is scheduled for completion by the end of Q1 2026.
The plant is EPR-registered and can handle 95 types of pre- and post-consumer battery scrap. Rocklink's proprietary R2 technology processes battery materials into aluminum, copper, and iron with over 98 percent efficiency. The facility uses an enclosed waste gas treatment system to capture hazardous volatile organic compounds.
Advanced Material Recovery and Expansion Plans
The facility includes semi-automated dismantling lines for permanent magnet alloys such as NdFeB, SmCo, and AlNiCo. These materials are essential for electric motors and industrial generators. Rocklink plans to introduce its Magcycle reverse logistics model, already active in Europe since 2018, to structure magnet scrap collection in India.
Rocklink India follows a "Know Your Material" approach, using in-house laboratory testing to assess elemental composition and oxidation levels. Materials unsuitable for direct recycling are processed in a 22-meter rotary kiln to produce rare earth chlorides.
The company intends to add battery refurbishment operations, enabling the reuse of viable battery cells through standardized testing and pack manufacturing. Rocklink also plans collaborations with technology startups, research institutions, and government stakeholders to improve automation and material recovery rates.
