An important turning point in the development of urban transportation in India has been reached with the launch of Sarala Aviation's prototype air taxi, Shunya, by the Bengaluru-based firm. By 2028, the firm hopes to introduce electric flying taxis, revolutionizing urban transportation.
Prototype Design and Specifications
With a top speed of 250 km/h, the Shunya is ideal for short-distance travel, covering 20–30 km. With its capacity for six people, the electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicle is a perfect way to reduce traffic in busy cities. Shunya is the largest payload eVTOL on the market right now, with a maximum payload of 680 kg.
Pricing and Accessibility
In order to make the air taxi services more widely available, Sarala Aviation plans to charge a pricing that is equivalent to that of other premium taxi services. The goal is to lessen urban pollution and offer a sustainable substitute for road-based mobility.
Company Vision and Future Plans
"Shunya is more than a technological achievement; it embodies our vision to redefine urban mobility in India," said Adrian Schmidt, co-founder and CEO of Sarla Aviation, highlighting the project's larger goal. Our goal is to unlock India's economic potential and pave the path for a cleaner, more connected future by tackling issues like pollution and traffic congestion."
Expansion Plans
Sarala Aviation intends to extend Shunya's air taxi services to other significant cities including Mumbai, Delhi, and Pune after launching in Bengaluru. To address urgent medical requirements in metropolitan areas, the firm has announced intentions to launch a free air ambulance service in addition to passenger services.
Funding and Founders
Adrian Schmidt, Rakesh Gaonkar, and Shivam Chauhan founded Sarla Aviation in October 2023. Leading investors, including Binny Bansal, a co-founder of Flipkart, and Nikhil Kamath, a co-founder of Zerodha, participated in the startup's recent USD 10 million Series A fundraising round, which was headed by Accel.
