SBIS E22–E30 Ethanol Norms Announced

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has released specifications for E22 to E30 ethanol-blended fuels. This move marks a significant step in India's ethanol blending roadmap, according to the All India Distillers' Association (AIDA). The new fuel standards aim to ease surplus pressures in the sugar and ethanol industries while supporting the country's shift toward flex-fuel vehicles.

Key Highlights

  • BIS publishes E22 to E30 ethanol-blended fuel specifications for India
  • E25 standard aims to ease surplus pressures in sugar and ethanol industries
  • AIDA calls for long-term shift to higher ethanol blends like E85 and E100
  • Flex-fuel vehicles seen as key to expanding ethanol use and reducing emissions

BIS Releases Ethanol Fuel Specifications

The BIS published technical standards for E22, E25, and E30 ethanol blends. These standards are designed to guide fuel producers and vehicle manufacturers as India increases its ethanol blending targets. AIDA President Vijendra Singh described the notification as a progressive step. He emphasized that it reaffirms the government's commitment to higher ethanol adoption and reduced crude oil imports.

Singh noted that these specifications will help create a cleaner mobility ecosystem in India. The standards are expected to support the country's long-term vision for sustainable transportation and energy security.

Industry Relief and Future Roadmap

The E25 fuel standard has attracted particular attention from the distilling sector. AIDA stated that E25 will provide interim relief to the industry. Surplus sugar and ethanol production have created supply chain pressures, and the new standards will help absorb this surplus.

Singh explained that the introduction of E25 fuel standards offers practical benefits for manufacturers and producers. He also highlighted the importance of moving toward higher ethanol blends, such as E85 and E100, in the future.

New production capacities are being commissioned across the sector. AIDA believes that the future of India's ethanol program will depend on the growth of flex-fuel mobility. The association calls for supportive policies and infrastructure to enable higher ethanol usage.

Flex-Fuel Vehicles and Policy Support

Flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs) can run on a wide range of ethanol-petrol blends. AIDA sees FFVs as central to India's ethanol strategy. FFVs can help increase ethanol consumption, strengthen energy security, and reduce vehicle emissions. They also support the creation of a sustainable domestic market for biofuels.

The introduction of E22 and E30 specifications sets the stage for next-generation ethanol-led mobility solutions. These standards bridge the gap between current blending targets and the goal of E85 and E100 adoption. AIDA urges continued policy and infrastructure support to realize this vision.

CarBike 360 Says

The rollout of E22 to E30 fuel standards signals a decisive shift in India’s alternative fuel strategy, aligning regulatory frameworks with the growing push for flex-fuel vehicles. As automakers adapt and infrastructure evolves, these norms could play a key role in reducing emissions and fuel dependency, ultimately strengthening India’s path toward sustainable and energy-secure mobility.
