KTM 390 SMC India launch likely with new 349cc engine
KTM is reportedly evaluating the launch of the 390 SMC in India, potentially powered by a new 349cc engine, signalling a fresh direction for its performance lineup.

KTM is evaluating the launch of the 390 SMC in India, which would complete its 390 range in the country. The 390 SMC is already manufactured in India and sold in global markets, but has not yet been introduced domestically. Bajaj Auto, KTM's partner in India, is cautious about the bike's prospects due to the unfamiliarity of the SuperMoto segment in the Indian market.
Key Highlights
- KTM may launch the 390 SMC in India with a 349cc engine.
- Expected power output is 41 HP and 33.5 Nm of torque.
- Features include long-travel suspension and 17-inch wire-spoke wheels.
- Launch could happen towards the end of 2026.
Key Features and Specifications
The India-spec KTM 390 SMC is expected to use a 349cc, liquid-cooled engine. This engine produces 41 HP and 33.5 Nm of peak torque. The decision to use a smaller engine is influenced by India's tax structure, which favours lower-displacement motorcycles. This strategy is intended to keep the price competitive and improve the bike's chances of success in India.
The motorcycle is likely to feature fully adjustable, long-travel suspension, similar to the setup found on the KTM 390 Enduro R. The front suspension offers 200mm of travel, while the rear provides 205mm. The 390 SMC will ride on 17-inch wire-spoke wheels equipped with tube-type street tyres, maintaining the SuperMoto character.
Market Position and Launch Timeline
KTM has not confirmed a launch date for the 390 SMC in India. The company is waiting for final approval from Bajaj Auto's leadership. If the project receives the green light, the launch could take place towards the end of 2026.
The motorcycle will likely be named KTM 390 SMC in India, rather than SMC R, reflecting KTM's existing naming strategy for the 390 Duke. This approach also allows KTM to introduce higher-spec variants in the future if the market responds positively.
Bajaj Auto's cautious approach stems from the novelty of the SuperMoto category in India. However, the use of a locally manufactured, downsized engine and competitive pricing could help the 390 SMC carve out a niche in the Indian motorcycle market.

CarBike 360 Says
KTM’s possible move to introduce the 390 SMC with a 349cc engine in India highlights the brand’s intent to expand its niche performance portfolio. If launched, the supermoto could attract enthusiasts seeking a lightweight, agile, and fun-to-ride machine. With growing interest in premium motorcycles, this model could carve out a unique space in the Indian market.
