Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter Receive Major Upgrades in Entry-Level SUV Segment
Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter have received substantial upgrades, including new features and design changes. The Punch now offers a turbo-petrol engine and EV option, while both models reclaim boot space and set new segment benchmarks.

The entry-level SUV segment has seen its most significant update since the Tata Punch launched in 2021. Both the Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter have received mid-life upgrades, introducing new features, design updates, and, for the Punch, a segment-first turbo-petrol engine.
Key Highlights
- Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter receive major mid-life upgrades in features and design
- Punch introduces a segment-first turbo-petrol engine and offers an EV powertrain option
- Both models reclaim boot space using different technologies and provide underbody spare tyres
- Tata Punch leads in sales, with Exter expected to improve after the update
- Maruti plans to launch a direct rival to the Punch within two years
Key Upgrades and Features

Both SUVs now offer upgraded digital screens, dual-tone interiors, wireless phone mirroring, connected car technology, a panoramic sunroof, tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and rear USB-C charging ports. The Tata Punch stands out with paddle shifters for its turbo automatic transmission and an electric vehicle (EV) powertrain option.
To address boot space, Tata uses twin-cylinder technology, while Hyundai employs its HY-CNG system. Both methods reclaim similar boot space, and both models include an underbody spare tyre.
Market Performance and Segment Impact
The Tata Punch remains one of the segment's most successful models, consistently achieving high monthly sales. In comparison, the Hyundai Exter's sales are respectable but do not match the Punch’s month-on-month numbers. The latest updates are expected to improve Hyundai’s sales performance.
Tata benefits from reporting combined sales figures for both its internal combustion engine (ICE) and EV variants, giving it an advantage in total volumes. This reporting method strengthens the Punch’s position in the market.
The upgrades in both models set a new benchmark for the segment. Competing vehicles, many of which are not styled as SUVs, must enhance their feature offerings to stay competitive. Increasing features is seen as the primary way to compete without affecting vehicle size or engine capacity.
Future Competition
Maruti plans to enter the entry-level SUV segment within the next two years. Its upcoming model will compete directly with the Tata Punch. The new Maruti SUV is expected to feature boxy styling, CNG or CBG powertrains, and an electric version. It will be positioned alongside the Swift in terms of price but will have a higher market status upon launch.
